Discourse Analysis Final Semester Examination

1. Give a brief explanation of the following terms and provide at least two examples of
each term. (20)
a. Word, utterance, and sentence
b. Co-text and context
c. Implicature (conventional and conversation)
d. Presupposition (semantics and pragmatics)
e. Reference
f. Inference
2. In Pragmalinguistics method of discourse analysis, there are some crucial points need
to be investigated. One of them is speech act. Mention and explain three types of
speech act and provide an example of those terms based on semantics and pragmatics
perspectives. (10)
3. Give a clear distinction between analogy and local interpretation in discourse analysis
and provide the example if necessary. (10)
4. In grammatical cohesion, there are some common elements need to be taken into
account, such as substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction. Explain and give an example
of each term. (20)
5. Consider and analyze the following statements based on the characteristics of Critical
Discourse Analysis, such as action (tindakan), context (konteks), history (historis),
power (kekuasaan), and ideology (ideology). (40)
a. “Anak itu sudah error”
b. “I sentence you to six months in prison” and “I now pronounce you husband
and wife”
c. ‘Beri aku 1.000 orang tua, niscaya akan kucabut Semeru dari akarnya, beri aku
10 pemuda, niscaya akan kuguncangkan dunia’
d. ‘Di jepang, ada sebuah program gerakan minum susu bagi generasi muda dan
anak anak setiap hari, tapi kita di NTT bangun dengan revolusi hijau. Kita
harus makan marungga tiap hari. Pasti kelihatan anaknya di sekolah bodoh. Ya
pasti karena tidak makan marungga’
