Welcome to the English Grade 1 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Words Related to Self,
Family, School and Community!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both
from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their
personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.

This module was designed and written with you in

mind. It is here to help you master the words that are related

to self, family, school and community. The scope of this

module permits it to be used in many different learning

situations. The language used recognizes the diverse

vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to

follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order

in which you read them can be changed to correspond

with the textbook you are now using.

Lesson Words that are related to
1 Self, Family, School and
Community
Words are used in different ways to express feelings

and ideas. Some words are related to self, family, school

and community. Those words will help us develop our way

of communication. In this lesson, you will work on series of

activities. So, be ready and have fun while learning!

What’s In

In your previous lesson, you learned about sentences

and non-sentences. A sentence is a group of words that

has a complete thought or idea. It starts with a big or

capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark. The

punctuation mark used can be a period (.) or a question

mark (?).

Examples: My mother is a loving person.

Are you a grade one pupil?

Non-sentence is a group of words that does not have

a complete thought or idea. Its first word does not start with

a capital letter. It does not have a punctuation mark at the

end. Non-sentence is also called a phrase.

Examples: my father

my big brother

Now, let us see if you can identify a sentence from a

non-sentence.
