Maybe Social Media becomes an avenue of seeking justice when the correct channels fail. On the 15th
of June 2020, on behalf of the family, I handed a booklet documenting the damages and the losses
occasioned by the stormwater to Dr Hillary Barchok, Governor of Bomet County. He assured us that
case will be attended to. He promised that an engineer was going to visit the area. Present in that
function were CECs, Sub-County Administrators, Ward Administrators, Town Committee, nominated
MCA Winny Bore, MCA Ambrose Koech (Mogogosiek Ward) among other dignitaries.
The stormwater runs from 24 area, Big 5, Market and Mogogosiek Shopping Centre recollects then
heads to our family land. All channels within the centre being intentionally diverted to drain water
into the channels leading to our land.
On the 22nd of February 2021, our family was scheduled to meet the governor in his office for
assistance. On arrival, we were informed that the Governor was attending a meeting in Nairobi. The
Deputy Governor, David Rotich (Algak) attended to us instead and again in presence of the area MCA
and nominated MCA.
The stormwater has created huge gulleys that have led to the loss of animal lives. Massive soil
erosion, crops destructions, destruction of structures among others are part of the list. We were
forced to graze our cattle near the shopping centre which is not good but we had no option. On most
occasions, the County Security officers would detain our cows for roaming in the shopping and
charged KES 650 per head. We are always in constant sermons from the chief and even the court over
damages and losses our cattle cause to our neighbours and shopping centre dwellers.
Even with all these, we are still hopeful that something will be done.
