Activity 1: A Case Study

Direction: In your separate sheet of paper, answer the following questions below that talks about how
globalization emerged in our country. Each question is marked as FIVE points.
The Coca-Cola Company

The Coca-Cola Company was founded in the United States in 1886. The company set up bottling
plants in Canada in 1906. In 1928, it introduced the soft drink Coca-Cola at the Olympic Games
which were held in Amsterdam. In the 1940s, the company began to set up bottling plants in
countries around the world.
Coca-Cola is popular because it has been advertised as a brand of soft drink connected with fun,
friends and good times. Its international image was successfully promoted by a 1971 commercial,
where a group of young people from all over the world gathered on a hilltop in Italy to sing "I'd Like
to Buy the World a Coke." In 1978, the Coca-Cola Company was selected as the only non-Chinese
company allowed selling packaged cold drinks in the People's Republic of China.
Today, the company produces nearly 400 brands in over 200 countries. More than 70 percent of the
company’s income comes from outside the United States. Coca-Cola is an extraordinarily successful
example of multinationalization . Its success raises the question of why and how it has been so
successful. The multinationalization of the Coca-Cola Company is also often used as an example to
illustrate the concept of economic globalization.

Questions to think about:

1. What is globalization?

The term "globalization" refers to how trade and technology have made the
world a more interconnected and interdependent place. Globalization also
encompasses the economic and societal developments that have resulted as a
result of it. It can be compared to the strands of a massive spider web that
have accumulated over millennia, with the number and reach of these threads
increasing over time.

2. What are the driving forces behind globalization?

The driving forces behind globalization are: Economic forces: national

economies' integration into the global economy, international trade, foreign
direct investment, and capital flow are all important aspects of the global
economy. Political forces: politicians are plotting to dismantle boundaries and
obstruct trade in order to improve global wealth and interdependence.
Sociocultural forces: the international dissemination of Western culture via
mass media such as film, radio, television, and the Internet. Technological
forces: worldwide development and growth. Transportation and
telecommunication reduce global distances and encourage people to form
intimate bonds.

3. In what ways does globalization affect the world?

Globalization provides numerous advantages in a variety of fields. It increased

cultural interactions and developed economies all over the world in a reciprocal
manner. It also enabled financial transactions between businesses, resulting in a
shift in the workplace paradigm. Today's world citizens include a large number of
people.

ACTIVITY 5
Study the 7 events in the table and decide which of the following aspects
of globalization the event illustrates: economic, informational, cultural or
political. The first one has been done for you as an example. You may
work in pairs and discuss the exercise with your partner. In your
discussion, please agree on the reasons for your decisions.

Activity 6

A. Discussion

First discuss in pairs and then as a whole class how economic,

technological, cultural or political globalization is affecting your
present lifestyle most. You must give examples from your daily
experience to elaborate your points.

Globalization has a wide range of effects on young cultures. Global consumerism has emerged
from the growth in media streams. American and European-produced content is progressively
dominating entertainment around the world through television, music videos, and movies.
Young people have a proclivity for adopting and interpreting global items in terms of their own
local cultures and experiences, resulting in new hybrid cultural forms with meanings that vary
depending on local and national circumstances.

A. Writing

Write a summary of the ideas expressed in this lesson about how

students’ lifestyles are affected by globalization.

Globalization improves the ability of students to acquire and apply knowledge. Learners' ability
to access, appraise, adopt, and apply knowledge is enhanced by globalization, as is their ability
to think independently, exercise appropriate judgment, and interact with others to make sense
of unfamiliar situations. Because of the global expansion of companies, many poor countries
have seen an improvement in their level of life as a result of improved roads and
transportation, improved health care, and higher education as a result of globalization.
