1. In an investigation to measure the acceleration of free fall a rod is suspended horizontally by
two vertical strings of equal length. The strings are a distance d apart.

When the rod is displaced by a small angle and then released, simple harmonic oscillations
take place in a horizontal plane.
The theoretical prediction for the period of oscillation T is given by the following equation
𝑐
𝑇= +𝐾
𝑑 √𝑔

where c is a known numerical constant.

(a) State the unit of c and K.
[2]

2
(b) A student records the time for 20 oscillations of the rod. Explain how this procedure leads
to a more accurate measurement of the time for one oscillation T.
[2]

(c) Two students conducted the experiment in which d is varied. The graph below shows the
variation of T with 1/d. One student predicted the relation as per the equation in part (a) and
the other one predicted the relation which where T is directly proportional to 1/d. Based on
the graph below, comment which student has predicted correctly.

[2]

3
(d) Draw the line of best fit for these data.
[1]

(e) The numerical value of the constant c in SI units is 1.67. Determine g, using the
graph.
[3]

Q2. The volume V of liquid flowing in time t through a pipe of radius r is given by the
equation

where P is the pressure difference between the ends of the pipe of length l, and C depends
on the frictional effects of the liquid.
An experiment is performed to determine C. The measurements made are shown below

(a) Calculate the absolute uncertainty in the value of C.

4
[3]

(b) State the value of C and its uncertainty to the appropriate number of significant figures.
[1]

Q3. This question is about momentum change.

(a) State the law of conservation of linear momentum.

[2]
(b) Gravel falls vertically onto a moving horizontal conveyor belt.

(i) The gravel falls at a constant rate of 13 kg s–1 through a height of 1.9 m. Show that
the vertical speed of the gravel as it lands on the conveyor belt is about 6 m s–1.

5
[2]
(ii) The gravel lands on the conveyor belt without rebounding. Calculate the rate of
change of the vertical momentum of the gravel.

[2]
(iii) Gravel first reaches the belt at t = 0.0 s and continues to fall. Determine the
total vertical force that the gravel exerts on the conveyor belt at t = 5.0 s.

[3]

6
(c) The conveyor belt moves with a constant horizontal speed of 1.5 m s–1. As the gravel
lands on the belt, it has no horizontal speed.
(i) Calculate the rate of change of the kinetic energy of the gravel due to its change in
horizontal speed.

[1]
(ii) Determine the power required to move the conveyor belt at constant speed.

[2]
(iii) Outline why the answers to (c)(i) and (ii) are different.

Q4. P and Q are fixed points on a line of greatest slope of an inclined plane. The point Q is at
a height of 0.45m above the level of P. A particle of mass 0.3 kg moves upwards along the
line PQ.

(i) Given that the plane is smooth and that the particle just reaches Q, find the speed with
which it passes through P.

[3]

(ii) It is given instead that the plane is rough. The particle passes through P with the same
speed as that found in part (i), and just reaches a point R which is between P and Q. The work
done against the frictional force in moving from P to R is 0.39 J. Find the potential energy
gained by the particle in moving from P to R and hence find the height of R above the level of
P.

Q5. A 24 kg cannonball is fixed from a cannon with a muzzle speed of 800 m/s at an
angle 41o with the horizontal. A second ball is fired with the same initial speed at an
angle 90∘. find the maximum height reached by each ball.

[4]
(b) Find the total mechanical energy of the ball-Earth system at the maximum height for each
ball.

[4]

Q6. A student investigates the speed of a trolley as it rolls down a slope, as illustrated in Fig.
below

The speed v of the trolley is measured using a speed sensor for different values of the time t
that the trolley has moved from rest down the slope.
The graph shows the variation with t of v.

(a) Use the graph to determine the acceleration of the trolley at the point on the graph where
t = 0.80 s.
(b) (i) State whether the acceleration is increasing or decreasing for values of t greater
than 0.6 s. Justify your answer by reference to the graph.

[2]

10
(ii) Suggest an explanation for this change in acceleration.

[1]

(c) Name the feature of the graph that indicates the presence of
(i) random error,

[1]
(ii) systematic error.

Q7. A car takes a turn around a circular path
(a) Which force will provide the necessary centripetal force?

[1]
(b) How should the speed of car vary for the safe turn if the radius of the path is
increased.

[1]
(c) What will happen to the acceleration of the car if instead of circular motion, it moves
along an elliptical path. Explain.
