7.2 Test pile shall be installed in accordance with BHEL stipulations as laid down in
specification no. PE-TS-298-600-C005 vide clause 4.0 of section-D24.

8. Preparatory Works
On completion of curing period of 28 days preparatory works shall be taken up in
sequential manner as per details below.

8.1 The test pile up to the cut off level where possible and the adjacent piles to be used
in the test for reaction purposes shall be excavated. The area around test piles shall
be excavated to allow working space ensuring adequate side slope. Wherever it is
not possible to excavate up to the cut off level due to the presence of ground water
table or involving deep and unstable excavation, test shall be conducted above the
cut off level. Thereafter, test pile concrete shall be checked for soundness and
reinforcements in the test region.

8.2 Pile surface shall be cleaned, levelled and dressed at the level of testing.

8.3 Datum bar shall be fixed with supports at specified distance away from pile face not
less than 3 times the dia of test pile.

8.4 Hydraulic jack of suitable capacity shall be placed at cut off level on the dressed
level between the test pile and the reaction piles. Suitable mild steel extension/ test
piece shall be provided to make up the space between piles after the jack is placed
in the line along pile centers. Necessary steel packing shall be provided for a tight
fit of the assembly.

9. Equipment and Test Setup

List of Equipment and Test Setup to be deployed is as under:

S. No. Description Qty.

1. Jack with pump As per requirement
2. 320 Crane As per requirement
3. Hydra As per requirement
4. JCB As per requirement
5. Displacement measuring instrument As per requirement
6. Pressure measuring instrument As per requirement
7. Steel Plates, accessories etc. As per requirement
8. Theodolite As per requirement

10. Loading System

Test load shall be 16.2 T for 600 mm dia. pile and 30.9 T for 900 mm dia. pile.

10.1 The test load on pile shall be 3 times the design load.

10.2 Loading shall be applied by a hydraulic jack of adequate capacity equipped with
spherical bearing at the top of the ram and bearing plate at the bottom side, abutting
the pile horizontally and reacting against a suitable system (refer Fig.1(a)).

10.3 The reaction shall be provided by a neighboring pile, in which case, thrust pieces
shall be inserted on either end of the jack to make up the gap, as approved by the
engineer (refer Fig.1(b)).

10.4 Load shall be applied on the pile preferably at cut-off-level.

11. Measuring System

Displacements shall be read by using at least 2 dial gauges of 0.01mm sensitivity
spaced at 30cm and kept horizontally one above the other on the test pile and the
displacement interpolated at cut-off level from similar triangles where cut-off level
is unapproachable and for approachable cut-off level, however, one dial gauge
placed diametrically opposite to the jack shall directly measure the displacement.

12. Test Procedure

a) Lateral load shall be applied to the pile top in increments (steps) of about
20 percent of the rated capacity of the pile or as directed by the engineer.
Displacement reading shall be taken before and immediately after the
application of next increment and at 15 minutes and thereafter at every
half-an-hour until application of the next load increment.

b) The next increment should be applied after the rate of displacement is

nearer to 0.1mm per 30 minutes.

c) Loading on the pile shall be continued till the applied load reaches 3 times
the safe lateral load carrying capacity or deflection of pile at the loading
point exceeds 12 mm.

d) Full test load shall be maintained on the pile head for 24 hours.

e) Unloading shall be carried out in the same steps as for loading. A

minimum period of 30 minutes shall be allowed to elapse between two
successive stages of load decrement.

f) Record of Readings:
The lateral load vs displacement curve shall be recorded in suitable tabular
form along with the complete information about the pile (refer Table.1(a),
1(b), 1(c), 1(d), 1(e) and 1(f)).

13. Assessment of Safe Load

The safe lateral load carrying capacity of single pile from the initial lateral load test
shall be the least of the following values.

1) 50 percent of the final load, at which the total deflection is 12 mm.

2) Load corresponding to 5 mm total deflection.

14. Statutory Consents

Before commencement of any construction activity, permission of the relevant
authorities will be provided to SIL by BHEL.

15. Program Reference

The works will be executed as per the time schedule agreed between SIL & BHEL.

16. Environment Management

Care shall be taken to safeguard environmental standards at work place and to
control dust.

17. Relevant documentation

The relevant documentation as per the Contract between SIL & BHEL shall be
followed.

18. Responsibility and Authority

The responsibility of works in SIL scope shall be as follows. The Project
coordinator shall be overall responsible for implementation of works. The Project
In-charge will be responsible for all construction and installation activities at site.
The Engineer & Supervisors will directly supervise the work at site under the
Project In-charge.
