1. Introduction
The objective of lateral load test of piles is to verify the design lateral load capacity of
pile.
5. Reference
Reference is made to BHEL (specification no. PE-TS-298-600-C005) of section-
D24 for testing of Bored Cast-in-Situ Piles at Anpara. The location of Test Piles
shall be provided by BHEL.
6. Specification Clauses
Initial test piles shall be tested in accordance with IS 2911 (Part 4) -1985
(Reaffirmed 1995), Load Test on Piles and BHEL stipulations laid down vide
clause 6.00 of section-D24.
7.1 Necessary survey shall be completed and test pile point shall be marked on ground
as per BHEL requirements.
7.2 Test pile shall be installed in accordance with BHEL stipulations as laid down in
specification no. PE-TS-298-600-C005 vide clause 4.0 of section-D24.
8. Preparatory Works
On completion of curing period of 28 days preparatory works shall be taken up in
sequential manner as per details below.
8.1 The test pile up to the cut off level where possible and the adjacent piles to be used
in the test for reaction purposes shall be excavated. The area around test piles shall
be excavated to allow working space ensuring adequate side slope. Wherever it is
not possible to excavate up to the cut off level due to the presence of ground water
table or involving deep and unstable excavation, test shall be conducted above the
cut off level. Thereafter, test pile concrete shall be checked for soundness and
reinforcements in the test region.
8.2 Pile surface shall be cleaned, levelled and dressed at the level of testing.
8.3 Datum bar shall be fixed with supports at specified distance away from pile face not
less than 3 times the dia of test pile.
8.4 Hydraulic jack of suitable capacity shall be placed at cut off level on the dressed
level between the test pile and the reaction piles. Suitable mild steel extension/ test
piece shall be provided to make up the space between piles after the jack is placed
in the line along pile centers. Necessary steel packing shall be provided for a tight
fit of the assembly.
10.1 The test load on pile shall be 3 times the design load.
10.2 Loading shall be applied by a hydraulic jack of adequate capacity equipped with
spherical bearing at the top of the ram and bearing plate at the bottom side, abutting
the pile horizontally and reacting against a suitable system (refer Fig.1(a)).
10.3 The reaction shall be provided by a neighboring pile, in which case, thrust pieces
shall be inserted on either end of the jack to make up the gap, as approved by the
engineer (refer Fig.1(b)).
c) Loading on the pile shall be continued till the applied load reaches 3 times
the safe lateral load carrying capacity or deflection of pile at the loading
point exceeds 12 mm.
d) Full test load shall be maintained on the pile head for 24 hours.
f) Record of Readings:
The lateral load vs displacement curve shall be recorded in suitable tabular
form along with the complete information about the pile (refer Table.1(a),
1(b), 1(c), 1(d), 1(e) and 1(f)).
