Causes
Genetics: May be inherited or strongly associated with other mental health
disorders among family members
Brain Chemical Problem: Result in depression, aggression, and destructive
urges
Brain Chemical Problem: MRI revealed patients with BPD had 3 brain parts
with smaller size or unusual activity:
1. Amygdala: Regulates emotions, especially "negative" ones like fear,
aggression and anxiety
2. Hippocampus: Helps regulate behavior and self-control
3. Orbitofrontal cortex: Involved in planning and decision making
Risk Factors
Hereditary predisposition: You may be at a higher risk if a close relative —
your mother, father, brother or sister — has the same or a similar disorder
Stressful/Traumatic Life events:
1. Victim of sexual, physical, and/or emotional abuse
2. Neglected or separated from guardians during childhood
3. Exposure to hostile conflict and unstable family relationships
4. Raised with a family member having drug addiction or mental health
condition
5. Lost a close friend or family member
