1. General

The PMS is either an integrated part of the IAS system, where the SW modules is running
in the IAS controllers, and the I/O can be mixed in the IAS cabinets, or a dedicated PMS
system with cabinets in the MSB if desirable.
The PMS is divided in two separate modules where the main part is running in separate
controllers. Each controller is controlling the equipment connected to the actual
switchboard, and the PMS will act as two different systems when the tiebreaker is open.
This document will describe the functions and the system components for the Power
Management System (PMS). This document will cover the functions of the diesel engines,
generators, generator breakers, and transfer feeder breakers.

Note: Some of the VDU presentations in this document will vary between different operator
station installations, and must only be treated as examples, as the final displays will be
presented in the project specific Mimic overview.

3. PMS System Components

3.1 Governors

3.1.1 Isochronous
The installed governors have load sharing and speed control, and are configured to run in
isochronous mode. As soon as the generator is connected to the MSB, the governor will
increase the load of the generator, until it has reached the mean load at the network. No
control from PMS is required after the breaker is connected to the MSB.

3.1.2 Droop
The installed governors have load sharing and speed control, and are configured to run in
Droop mode. As soon as the generator is connected to the MSB, the PMS will increase
the load of the generator, until it has reached the mean load at the network. The load
sharing between the generators is then done by the governors the PMS will then adjust
the frequency on the network.

3.2 Synchronizers

For each generator breaker, a synchronizer is used. When a breaker is to be

synchronized, the PMS will issue sync. Command to the actual synchronizer until the
breaker is closed or timed out.
For the TIE breaker, a separate synchronizer is used.
The PMS uses this to close the tiebreaker, when the operator issues a command to close
the tiebreaker from the VDU.

3.3 Safety Units

The safety system is delivered from the engine manufacturer and will handle all safety
functions.

3.4 PMS Units - Process Controllers AC800M

2 pcs of ABB AC800M Process controllers with Profibus I/O communication bus.
The controllers will handle all PMS functions, except from local start/stop and Shut Down,
which is handled by the CSS located in the engine room.

3.5 PMS I/O Stations

Where the ABB PMS is an integrated part of the vessels IAS, the PMS I/O signals are
connected to the system via the IAS I/O cabinets, as a regular signal. To which cabinet
and channel where each PMS signal is connected is normally defined by the yard, and
has no actual meaning to the PMS functions.

4. PMS Local operation

4.1 General

There are two different levels of DG operation:

 Locally at engine panel and switchboard
 Remote/Auto from the PMS
This philosophy for the LOCAL/REMOTE definition is important for the functions
described.
When the system is set to local, the PMS functions are disabled, and the operator must
manually perform all functions required for use of the DG.
Any of the two LOCAL switches in ER or MSB will cause the generator to be set to
LOCAL in the PMS. The actual switch is also indicated at the VDU.

4.2 Local Engine Control

The engine can be started and stopped locally from the engine control panel, located by
the engine.
The Shut Down function is independent of the LOCAL/REMOTE switch.

4.3 Local Switchboard Control

4.3.1 General
When the LOCAL/REMOTE switch in the MSB is set to LOCAL, the local operation of the
DG from switches in the MSB is enabled if fitted. Engine must then be in remote.

4.3.2 Start/Stop
From the start/stop switches at the MSB, the operator can start and stop the engine when
running in LOCAL.

4.3.3 Synchronize
In Local Manuel mode, the increase/decrease switches will control the speed setting of
the engine, and manual synchronization will be possible.
The synchronizer in the switchboard will connect the breaker at the correct angle, when a
local connect order is given from the operator.
In Local Auto mode, the MSB will automatic synchronize from the synchronizer.

4.3.4 Unload/Disconnect
The disconnection of a LOCAL generator is done in a traditional way, by decreasing the
load, and disconnecting the breaker when the load is reduced.
The operator should carefully observe the load situation at the parallel generators, when
unloading, in order to prevent an overload situation.

5. PMS Operation

5.1 System Functions

The PMS will handle all necessary functions for controlling the diesel generators,
synchronizer, governors and MSB breakers.
By a number of VDU pictures, the operator will get the status information, and be able to
control parameters and functions in order to provide the necessary number of generators
connected to the MSB.
The main parameters in the system are the actual number of generators to be kept
connected by the system, and the desired start order sequence the engines should be
started in.
The actual number is determined by the mode selected, and normally the mode defines a
minimum numbers of generators to be connected regardless of the consumed power.
When these parameters are altered, the system will automatically arrange the generators,
breakers and other components in order to do the desired configuration.

The major PMS functions are:

Load dependent start/stop

Standby start, Pre warning
Standby stop, Shutdown
Alarm handling/status indication
Mode handling (keeps a mode-defined number of DG’s connected)
Partial/total Blackout handling
Volt/frequency alarm handling
Reconnection of breakers after blackout
Load control of propulsion drives

5.2 Tie Breaker control

5.2.1 General
The tiebreaker control can be performed manually from the VDU, or locally from the MSB.
When tiebreaker is open, the system will go into SPLIT-mode.
The difference in operation from the operator’s point of view will be different start order
selectors for bus closed and for bus open. When the bus opens, the PMS actually will
handle the two buses as two individual systems, and the operator will also operate the
systems individually from two different start order selectors, as well as two different
MINIMUM NUMBER selectors. Each of those operator changeable digits will change color
when the tiebreaker changes status, in order to indicate for the operation, which one is
valid for the actual mode.

5.2.2 Closed transfer breaker

When the tiebreaker is closed, the AUTO operation from the PMS is based on the start
order selection, set by the operator. The start order defines the order the PMS will connect
generators to the MSB based on the actual power requirement, or the minimum number
set at the VDU by the operator.
In such mode it is recommends always to have at least two DG’s connected, and one at
each side of the transfer breaker. However, such control is subject to the Operators
decision; the PMS is not making this restriction to the system.

5.2.3 Start order selector

Each DG is located in a priority array, in order to control the start order of the engines.
The DG with the highest priority will usually be running, and the next one to start is the
one with a higher sequence number.
Only the ones in AUTO and AVAILABLE, will be active members in the array. Unavailable
generators will not be considered in the array.

5.2.4 Start order and Min/Max No selection

This figure shows the start order selection method for the PMS. When the transfer breaker
is closed, the operator will control the start order and Min/Max No from a central menu,
and when the transfer breaker is open, the operator will use the side tables which appear.
Only the start order array in use, will be displayed in the VDU, the other arrays will be
hidden.

The sequence is changed by right clicking the position in the array which the operator
wants to change and the Gen no is selected from the roll down menu.
The entered Gen no. will now be set in this position of the start sequence and the
generator previous in this position will swap to the location where the entered generator
was located.
When a generator is selected as the last one in seq. it will unload, disconnect and stop
after the predefined cool-down time if it is not required by the actual power consumption.

5.3 Number of generators connected

The actual number of generators to be connected is controlled from the following two
criteria:

 Total power consumption.

 Minimum number set by the operator or the mode selection

The power consumption will calculate a minimum number of generators required in order
to keep the load at each DG within the limits set in the system. These two limits are
POWER_START_LIM, and POWER_STOP_LIM.

The actual number of generators connected to the MSB by the PMS will be the highest
value of the two above mentioned criteria.

5.4 Maximum Number

To improve the fuel economy, it is possible to limit the numbers of generators connected
in order to prevent a load dependent start of the next generator. This makes it possible to
run the connected generators with a high and fuel-efficient load. The maximum number is
entered on the VDU.

6. VDU Object presentation

6.1 Generator Object

Each DG will be presented at the VDU as an object.

The operator will perform all actual commands for the generator by
operating the object.
In the bottom of each object, the actual state of the object will be
presented:
ST-BY
STARTING
SYNCHRONIZING
UPLOADING
DELIVERING
UNLOADING
COOL-DOWN
STOPPING

The actual modes are: AUTO, MANUAL and LOCAL.

Normally the object is shown as an open circle, and if the engine is
running, the object will be filled.

Four different colors are used to indicate the different conditions of the
DG.
Green - The DG is in AUTO available.
Red -The DG is in alarm condition and not available
White -The DG is in LOCAL (Engine / MSB)
Grey -The DG is not available.

6.2 Power Object

This figure shows the POWER indication, where the right bar indicates the
used power, and the left bar indicates the available power.
If the system normally is operated in open bustie mode, a set of bars for each
MSB side will be presented.

7. PMS Auto Functions

7.1 Auto Start/Stop

The auto start function handles the start of the engine in situations when this is required
by the power demand, minimum selection or manual start from the VDU.
All these start functions will activate the start program, if all start requirements are fulfilled.

7.2 Load dependent start/stop of generators

This function controls the described variable MIN_NO_POW. This variable is increased
and decreased based on the following system values.

7.2.1 Load dependent start

The load program will start a generator in AUTO mode, available, and selected as the
next to start in the sequence array, when the total average power has exceeded a certain
load (LOAD START) for a certain time (LOAD START DELAY).
The DG will start and connect to the MSB.

7.2.2 Load dependent stop

This program will handle the automatic stop of the DG with the lowest priority if the
number of available gen. connected is higher than the MIN_NO for the predefined stop
time.
The DG will be unloaded, and when the load is below a certain limit (LOW POW DISC)
the generator breaker will be disconnected.
The engine will be kept running for a certain time (COOL TIME) before the stop solenoid
is activated.

Load dependent start

High mean power limit = 85% LOAD_START
Start time delay power = 15 sec LOAD_START_DELAY
Load dependent stop
Low power limit = 70% LOAD_STOP
Stop time delay power = 15 min LOAD_STOP_DELAY

The figure shows the VDU presentation of the Load Dependent Start/Stop limits and Delays

7.3 Automatic synchronizing

An external synchronizer located in the MSB handles the synchronizing in this system.
The synchronizer is activated with a relay contact from the PMS, when the generator
frequency has reached the nominal frequency.
The sync. signal is activated until the breaker is closed, or until the predefined sync. alarm
time has elapsed.
In case of a sync. alarm, the sync. signal will be reset, and the PMS will start the next
generator in the start order.

8. Protection

8.1 General

Each generator set in the power system has a number of possible protection functions
which main task is either to protect the unit from a more serious fault or protect the power
system from entering a blackout situation.

8.2 Functions

The following protection functions are available in the ABB power management system:

 Start block
 Shut down
 Pre-warning
 Node failure
 Start failure
 Synchronize failure
 Breaker trip
 Disconnect failure

 Stop failure
 Run failure
 Power signal failure
 Voltage failure
 Frequency failure
 Reset Alarm

Descriptions of the functions are given below.

8.2.1 Start block

When the following alarms and conditions are present the engine will be start blocked
 Shut-down
 Pre-warning
 Start-block from CSS
 Start-block from 6.6KV SWBD

A visual start-block status will be presented at the operator station.

8.2.2 SHUT DOWN function

Each engine is normally delivered with a safety system, totally independent from the rest
of the system.
At Least the following conditions will initiate a shut down:

 Over-speed
 Low Lube Oil Press
 HI Cooling Water temp (May be defined as a "reduce load alarm")

Digital shut down signals is wired to the engine control cabinet.

When a shutdown is detected, the stop solenoid will be energized, and a SD signal is sent
to the PMS, which will immediately disconnect the breaker, and start the next generator in
the sequence.

The faulty DG will be set to MANUAL.

8.2.3 PRE-WARNING Alarm

The pre warning alarm is a function which automatically starts the next available generator
if any of the engine conditions which will lead to a shutdown of the engine is getting critical
near the shut down limit.
The function will try to avoid the critical situation, which can occur if a connected generator
suddenly trips out.

Typical pre-warning alarms:

 Low Fuel Oil Press
 Low Lube Oil Press
 High Cooling Water Temp
 High Winding Temperatures (Phase U, V, W)
 High Bearing Temperatures (NE, NDE)

When the system detects one of these conditions, and the generator is connected, it will
initiate a standby start of the next available DG.
When the new generator is synchronized and connected to the MSB, the actual generator
will be unloaded, disconnected and stopped.
The actual generator will be forced to MANUAL mode as soon as it is disconnected.
The DG will not be available for start until the alarm has been reset from the VDU, and
manually set back to AUTO.

8.3 Alarm handling

Each generator object has a number of calculated alarms. The alarm functions are
explained in detail in this chapter.

All alarms needs to be reset by the operator, and some of the alarms will not disappear
until the condition is reset.

8.3.1 Start Failure

This alarm is activated when the start order has been active longer time than defined for
maximum start time.

Actions:
 Alarm

8.3.7 Power Failure

This alarm is activated when a failure is detected in the power measurement. It may be a
broken wire or a fuse failure.
As PMS no longer can detect the correct power consumption at the net, this alarm is
critical, and will lead to a PRE-WARNING. (ST-BY gen started)

Actions:
 Alarm
 PRE-WARNING

8.3.8 Breaker Signal Alarm

This alarm is activated if the PMS detects power at a generator and the connected signal
is not active. This indicates a failure in the signal for breaker status.

Actions:
 Alarm

8.3.9 Frequency/Volt failure

This alarm is activated if the system detects that the engine is running, and there is no
frequency or voltage detected from the generator (connected or not)
Actions:
 Alarm
 Drive - Load Control

8.4 Drive-Control (Option)

8.4.1 General
The definition of which consumers that is most important can vary from the actual
operation mode. The PMS load control will use different priority for each consumer
defined by the modes in the system.
The actual mode setting will control the max load limit to be allowed from the drives to
load the generators with.

8.4.2 Load Reduction for thrusters

Each thruster drive will get an available power signal from the PMS.
The system will prevent the generators from overload, and reduce the risk for a total
blackout in case of an unpredictable generator trip.

The system also detects the actual requested load for each drive, and will based upon the
request, divide the available power between the drives based upon a special load
shearing algorithm.

9. Failure Handling

9.1 General

All PMS functions are controlled from the two nodes, Node1 and Node2. The components
on the port side of the vessel are controlled from Node1 and the STBD side is controlled
from Node 2.
Normally the one side of the MSB is capable of keeping the vessel in operation, in case of
a failure at the opposite side.

As the load shearing method is arranged with isochronous control by each engine
governor, no active control is needed from the PMS when the generator is running on line.

Based upon this important fact and the fact that ALL control outputs from PMS is normally
de energized outputs, no failure on any PMS component will cause any generator to trip
or stop.
In addition to this, all components may be controlled locally by the operator, which
enables the complete power plant to be operated without any PMS control at all.

9.2 Total loss of all components

Even with a total power loss for the complete system (Power down of both IAS Nodes),
the power generation will keep running with without any change in the power plant
configuration and capacity.

Different failures may only lead to a loss in the ability to change the generator
configuration from the PMS, and the operator must in most cases control the plant from
local control in the ER and from the MSB.

9.3 Failure of an Operator Station

As there normally are at least two operator stations available in the IAS/PMS, the
operation may at any time be performed from either of the operator stations in the system.
As no control functions are performed by any operator station, no failure of any operator
station will influence the power plant control.

9.4 Failure of an IAS / PMS Node

The node failure function will be activated when one PMS node has lost contact with
another PMS node. This is achieved by watchdog functions implemented in both PMS
nodes.

The PMS functions in the faulty PMS node will be lost. The generators will continue to run
with the actual load, and the CSS will still perform necessary engine surveillance of the
engine.
To indicate that a vital component of the PMS has failed to communicate, this will cause
all symbols at the operator station connected to the faulty controller to disappear. All
pictures at the operator station where the symbol normally is presented, a black field with
the shape of the symbol will be indicated.

A visual PMS node alarm will be presented on the operator stations.

9.5 Failure of the Control network

As the control network in the system is dual network divided in two totally independent
networks, no failure at one of these networks will cause any operational effects.

9.6 Profibus I/O Failure

The Profibus network is normally the communication link between the controller and the
I/O stations.
This bus is designed to be redundant, but in any cases there are ways that the controller
might lose communication with all the I/O stations at the actual side.
In this case the effect would be that all components controlled from the actual controller
will be alarmed, and the component itself will be treated as not available in the PMS.
As all information on the components at the faulty side is missing, the system will, if
necessary connect available generators at the healthy side.
No loss in power capacity will be the result of this type of failure.

9.7 I/O Station Failure

As the different PMS signals may be connected to the controller from different I/O
cabinets, the PMS function may be affected of a failure of one I/O station.
As the definition of the availability of an engine, generator or breaker is based upon a
combination of physical input signals and a calculated healthy status based upon
expected feedback based upon commands, any type of I/O failure will be detected in the

PMS, and the actual DG, will in this case be alarmed, and treated as NOT AVAILABLE by
the system.
Due to the half ship principle, there will always be at least half of the generators available
at the opposite side, which will be used by the PMS in order to keep the desired number
of generators on line.

So the works case will be that half of the PMS components (DG) are connected to this I/O
cabinet, and the PMS will lose control of this units, with the result that the opposite
components will be used.

10. Blackout

10.1 General

Three different types of blackouts are defined:

A blackout is defined when the voltage on the MSB is lower than a certain blackout level,
and no generators connected.
 Partial blackout (one bus only)
 Total Blackout

10.1.1 Partial Blackout

If the system is designed to run with closed bus tie, partial blackout will only occur when
there is a major fault at one of the switchboards. If PMS is able to detect a major fault,
PMS will open the bus tie and by this action try to isolate the faulty side from the healthy
side.
In this case the system will work as if the two generators at the faulty side is not available,
and the healthy side will run as normal.

10.1.2 Total Blackout

When a total blackout is confirmed, a start signal is given to all available DG’s.
The first DG to reach the nominal frequency will then issue a "connect inhibit signal" to the
other DG’s, in order to prevent other generators to connect to the MSB simultaneously.
The breaker will then be closed, and the rest of the available generators will synchronize
normally.
After a predefined time period, the number of connected generators will be decreased to
the number selected by the mode, or the number required due to the total load.

10.1.3 Normal Mode(s)

The system will also handle reconnection of important breakers after blackout.
When the first generator is connected to the MSB, the system will reconnect the breakers
that were connected before the blackout.
Breakers in Local control will not be reconnected.
This function will also be active in case of a partial blackout.
