THE EFFECTS OF CORONA VIRUS IN THE LABOR MARKET ACTIVITY

IN MARCOS, ILOCOS NORTE.

INTRODUCTION
A labor market in an economy functions with demand and supply of labor. In this market,
labor demand is the firm's demand for labor and supply is the worker's supply of labor. The
supply and demand of labor in the market is influenced by changes in the bargaining
power(Economic Times, 2021), this is why bob is very important to the lives of the people, with
this they can be able to provide the needs of their family but when the pandemic came it
affected the lives of the people in Marcos, Ilocos Norte especially their jobs.

This study aimed to determine The Effect of Corona Virus (COVID-19) on the labor
market activity in Marcos, Ilocos Norte and is sought to determine the (a) employment rate in
Marcos, Ilocos Norte; (b) the job and job status of the employed Marcoseños; (c) the top
causes of unemployment rate in Marcos.

The result of this study will provide a good basis of how many Marcosenos have lost
their jobs with this they can improvement government policies and adjustments to help those
who are highly affected by the pandemic in terms of employment.

This study used descriptive kind of quantitative research design. Researchers used this
type of research because through this the researchers can be able to explain well the residents
on Marcos, Ilocos Norte of those who are employed and unemployed. The 1,257 participants in
the study were the residents of Marcos, Ilocos Norte who are 18-25 years old. The researchers
chose the participants because researchers wanted to help them to address their current
problems through to the Local Government Unit of Marcos. The researchers gathered data
through survey questionnaires. The survey questionnaires contain three questions which are
open and close ended questions. This question formulated and aligned to the problem and
research questions of the study to gathered data at the same time it will answer the research
problem.
BODY
The collected data were examined to identify if the Corona Virus (COVID-19) made an
impact on the labor market activity in Marcos, Ilocos Norte.

Table 1 shows that 445 or 34.57%% of our respondents are employed and 739 with a
percentage of 63.09% were unemployed.

Table 2 shows that 221 or 49.66% of those employed Marcosenos have a full time job;
97 or 21.79% are on part time job; 40 or 8.98% of our employed respondents are self-employed;
28 or 6.29% of them are working for others; 18 or 4.04% of them are on casual job: 10 or 2.25%
of our empoyed respondents are busy on farming; 6 or 1.35% of them are public servants; and
4 or 0.89% of them are working in stay-in jobs.

Table 3 shows that 234 or 28.88% of those unemployed Marcosenos had returned or
returning to school; 210 or 25.86% of them do not have jobs because of personal and family
responsibilities; 86 0r 10.59% are still waiting for a new job to start same with the reason of
there is no suitable work available; 83 or 10.22% of them are not employed because of the
COVID-19 threat; 56 or 6.89% of them cannot have work because they are busy with their
online class; 17 or 2.09% of our unemployed respondents are on layoff or expecting to return to
work; 11 or 1.35% of them have no transportation; 10 of them or 1.33 had just graduated; 8 05
0.98% of them are on maternity leave; 6 of them or 0.72% cannot work because of their own
illness or disability; 2 or 0.34% of them are not working because they are financially stable and it
is their self-decision and 1 or 0.12% of our unemployed respondents cannot work because they
are on Internship Program.

CONCLUSION

Based on the findings of this study, the following conclusions are drawn:
1. There were 445 or 34.57% of the respondents who are employed for the months of
March and April 2021; 812 or 63.09% of the respondents who are unemployed for the
months of March and April 2021.
2. There were 221 or 49.66% of the employed respondents who have a full time job status
for the months of March and April 2021; 97 or 21.79% of the employed respondents who
have a part time job for the months of March and April 2021; 18 or 4.04% of the
employed respondents who have a casual job status for the months of March and April
2021; 11 or 2.47% of the employed respondents who have a seasonal job status for the
months of March and April 2021; 28 or 6.29% of the employed respondents who are
working for others of the months of March and April 2021; 40 or 8.98% of the employed
respondents who are self- employed for the months of March and April 2021; 4 or 0.89%
of the employed respondents who have a stay in job status for the months of March and
April 2021; 6 or 1.35% of the employed respondents are a barangay official for the
months of March and April 2021; 10 or 2.25 % of the employed respondents are into
farming for the months of March and April 2021;
3. There were 234 or 28.88% of the respondents are unemployed is because they are
returning to school for the months of March and April 2021; 210 or 25.86% of the
respondents are unemployed is because of their personal or family responsibilities for
the months of March and April 2021; 86 or 10.59% of the respondents are unemployed
is because they are waiting for a new job to start for the months of March and April 2021;
86 or 10.59% of the respondents are unemployed is because of there is no suitable work
available for the months of March and April 2021; 83 or 10.22% of the respondents are
unemployed is because of the threat of Corona Virus (COVID-19) for the months of
March and April 2021.

Marcoseňos who are employed and unemployed for the months of March and April, 2021 and
the reasons why do they belong in the aforementioned status.
