Simple Past Tense is an action that happened at specific time in the past.

There can be few actions happening one after another.These can be in terms of:

1. Events in the past that are now finished.


2. Situation in the past.
3. A series of actions in the past.

Use 1: Past actions that are now finished

The first use of the simple past is to express actions that happened at a specific time in the past.

Examples are:

a. We watched movie last night.

b. I enjoyed playing guitar yesterday.

c. I travelled to Japan last summer.

Use 2: Situation in the Past

Another use of this tense is to talk about situations in the past.

Examples are:

a. I studied American literature for five years.

b. I did not stay at the wedding ceremony the entire time

Use 3: A series of actions in the Past

The past simple can also be used with a few actions in the past happening one after another.

Examples are:

a. Lily arrived from home at five in the afternoon, watched a movie, and slept for half an hour.

b. I finished my work, walked home, and played a guitar.

c. Grace arrived from work at 6 in the evening, prepared for dinner, and ate with her family.
The Past Perfect is a verb tense which is used to show that an action took place once or many
times before another point in the past.

Past Perfect Forms

1. The past perfect is formed using had + past participle.


2. Questions are indicated by inverting the subject and had.
3. Negatives are made with not.

Example:

Statement: You had studied playing guitar in Manila before you moved in California.

Question: Had you studied playing guitar before you moved in California?

Negative: You had not studied playing guitar before you moved in California.
