Answer: (1,5)

It was very easy, Sir.

2. Analysis

How did you find the activity?

That proves that you are already very

familiar with factoring of polynomials.

Students raised their hands.

3. Abstraction

Today we will be dealing with the other

theorem that can help us to make the

division of polynomials and finding its

factors easier. Before we proceed to the

discussion, do you have an idea about Students Listen.

synthetic division?

Okay good, Factor Theorem is a result of

the Remainder Theorem and is based on

the same reasoning. Based on the

Remainder Theorem, if you divide a

polynomial P(x) by a factor x – k of that

polynomial, then the result will be zero

remainder. Let's look again at that Division

Algorithm expression of the polynomial:

P ( x ) =( x−k ) q ( x ) +r ( x )

If x – k is indeed a factor of P(x), then the

remainder after division by x – k will be
zero.

The point of the Factor Theorem is the

reverse of the Remainder Theorem: If you
synthetic-divide a polynomial by x = k and
get a zero remainder, then, not only
is x = k a zero (root) of the polynomial
(courtesy of the Remainder Theorem),
but x – k is also a factor of the polynomial
(courtesy of the Factor Theorem). Here is
an example.

1) Show that (x+2) is a factor of x3 - 6x2 – x + 30.

Solution

-2 1 -6 -1 30
-2 16 -30
1 -8 15 0

The remainder is zero, so (x+2) is a factor of the

x3 - 6x2 – x + 30.

You can use synthetic division to help you with

this type of problem.  The Remainder Theorem

states that P(k) = the remainder.  So, if the

remainder comes out to be 0 when you apply

synthetic division, then x - k is a factor of P(x).

Factor Theorem is based on the same reasoning

as remainder theorem. It is usually use in
finding factors of polynomials. It states that the
polynomial P(x) has x - k as a factor if and only if
P(k) = 0.
Proof. There are two parts of the proof of the
factor theorem, namely:
Given a polynomial P(x),
1. If x – k is a factor of P(x), then P(k) = 0.
2. If P(k) = 0, then x – k is a factor of P(x). Yes, Sir. It was very easy.

Do you understand what is Factor Theorem

class?

We have here some further examples.

1) Show that x+1 is a factor of 2x3 + 5x2 - 3.

Solution

-1 2 5 0 -3
-2 -3 -3

2 3 -3 0

The remainder is zero using

synthetic division then by factor theory x+1 is a
factor of 2x3 + 5x2 -

2) Find the value of k for which the

binomial (x+4) is a factor of x4 + kx3 - 4x2.
Solution

If (x+4) is a factor of x4 + kx3 - 4x2, we know from

the Factor Theorem that P(-4) = 0.

P(-4) = (-4)4 + k(-4)3 - 4(-4)2

256 – 64 k – 64 = 0
64 k 192
=
64 64
k=3

To check whether correct or not, use synthetic

division to divide P(x) = x4 + kx3 - 4x2 by x+4.

-4 1 3 -4 0 0
-4 4 0 0

-4 -1 0 0 0

This shows that the

remainder when P(x) is divided by x+4 is 0.

Here’s another activity. I will give you 5 minutes

to solve this using factor theorem.

1) Identify whether x + 2 is a factor of x3 +

3x2 + 5x + 6.
2) Identify whether (x – 2) is a factor of x 3 –
2x2 – x + 2
3) Examine whether x + 2 is a factor of x3 +
3x2 + 5x + 6 Yes, Sir. (Students volunteer to answer.)

x + 2 is a factor of x3 + 3x2 + 5x + 6.

(After five minutes) Are you done students? x – 2 is a factor of x3 – 2x2 – x + 2

What is your answer in number 1? x + 2 is a factor of x3 + 3x2 + 5x + 6

Very good. How about in number 2?

That’s correct, how about in number 3?

None, Sir.
Okay, very good.

Do you have any question class? Students volunteered.

Factor Theorem is based on the same
4. Generalization: reasoning as remainder theorem. It is

Now, his account has no diamonds left.
How much did each skin cost?
2. There are (x3 + 3x2 – 6x – 8) slices of pizza,
proved that (x + 1) of your friends can eat all
of the slices.
IV. EVALUATION
