2. Review
“What have we discussed yesterday?”

“Yesterday, we have
“That’s right! What is ecosystem?” discussed about
ecosystem.”

“An ecosystem is the

community of organisms
“Very good!” interacting with one
another as well as with
their own non-living
environment.)

“What are the two components of ecosystem?”

“The two components of

ecosystem is biotic and
abiotic.”
“You’ve got it right!”

“Thank you, Ma’am!”

C. Explore
1. Motivation

(The teacher will show a printed picture)

“Class, what can you see?”

“It’s a logo of cycle. That
is used when creating a
cycle”

“That’s right! Can you give me your example of

cycle? Like for example what preparations do
you do before going to school?” (Student will state their
own cycle on
preparations before
going to school.”
“Well done!”
“Do you want to know more about Cycles?”

“Yes, Ma’am!”

2. Presentation

“A cycle is a series of change which comes

back to the starting point which can be
repeated. In science we also have many cycles.

“Can you give me an example of gases in the

atmosphere?”
“Nitrogen and Oxygen”
“That’s right! Did you know that they also have
cycles?”

“The materials that make up living organisms

return to the physical environment and are
reused by other living organisms. This cyclic
process ensures a steady supply of much-
needed materials to keep ecosystems alive.
Biogeochemical Cycles are a term used to
describe this process.”

3. Pre- Activity

“I would like you to answer my questions.”

“What is Biogeological Cycle in your own

understanding?” “It is a cycle that has
something to do with the
chemical substance
moves in earth.”
“Very good!”

“Can someone read what is the definition of

Biogeological Cycle in the textbook.” “A biogeochemical
cycle or substance
turnover or cycling of
substances is a pathway
by which a chemical
substance moves
through biotic
(biosphere) and abiotic
(lithosphere,
atmosphere, and
hydrosphere)
compartments of Earth.”

“Very Good. The biogeochemical cycles called

are the water cycle, carbon-dioxide cycle,
nitrogen cycles, phosphorus cycle and sulfur
cycle.”

4. Activity Proper

Please bring out your ballpen. Write your

answer in the space provide.

Activity 1. LET’S THINK!

1.Define what is Biogeochemical Cycle in (Students will answer

your own words? the Activity Sheet given)

2.What are the biogeochemical cycles?

D. Explain
1. Discussion

“The Biogeochemical Cycle will be the topic of

our today’s lesson. Do you know what the
Biogeochemical Cycle is?”

“The materials that make up living organisms

return to the physical environment and are
reused by other living organisms. This cyclic
process ensures a steady supply of much-
needed materials to keep ecosystems alive.
This pass way is called Biogeochemical Cycles
are a term used to describe this process.”

“Four of the biogeochemical cycles that occur in

nature will be discussed. Water or Hydrologic
Cycle, Carbon-oxygen Cycle, Nitrogen Cycle,
Phosphorus Cycle, and Sulfur Cycle are all
examples of these cycles.”
“Let’s start with the Water or Hydrologic Cycle.
Do you have any idea how Water Cycle works?”

“Do you realize how vital water is to our

survival?”
“Yes, without it we are
going to die. Our body
needs water. Everyone
needs water in their life.”
“You’ve got it right! Now I will discuss how water
cycle work. Water Cycle describes the
continuous movement of water on, above and
below the surface of the Earth.”

“If we look into a body of water in our

surroundings, such as a small pond, we can see
how evaporation from the water releases water
vapor into the atmosphere, then condensation
changes the water vapor back into liquid water,
forming clouds above, and then precipitation
returns to the earth in the form of rain, snow, or
other forms. Water on the ground infiltrates into
the soil when it rains, a process known as
infiltration. When excess water can no longer
permeate the soil, it flows or runs off over the
land surface, or it may remain stagnant,
allowing evaporation to resume.”

“What are the process of Water Cycle again?”

“Evaporation,
condensation and
precipitation.”
“Well done. Now let’s proceed to the next one.
The Oxygen-Carbon Cycle.”

“ Oxygen-carbon cycle is the biogeochemical

cycle by which carbon is exchanged among the
biosphere, pedosphere, geosphere,
hydrosphere, and atmosphere of the Earth.”

“When we exhale, we release carbon dioxide,

which is then used by plants in photosynthesis
to create food, and as a byproduct, they release
oxygen, which then returns to the atmosphere.
Now this free oxygen is the one that we inhale,
and this free oxygen in our environment is the
one that we inhale back for our metabolic
processes, and so on.”
“We are done with the water and oxygen-carbon
cycle now let’s proceed to the third cycle which
is Nitrogen Cycle.”

“Nitrogen is the biogeochemical cycle by which

nitrogen is converted into multiple chemical
forms as it circulates among atmosphere,
terrestrial, and marine ecosystems.”

“It is a continuous series of natural processes by

which nitrogen passes successively from air to
soil to organisms and back to air or soil
involving principally nitrogen fixation,
nitrification, decay, and denitrification.”

“Next is the Phosphorus Cycle. Have you heard

about Phosphorus Cycle? “

“I don’t think we are

“I understand. Those 3 cycles that I discussed familiar with that,
are the ones most commonly focused in some Ma’am. “
science books but for additional information we
are also going to discuss this.”

“From the word Phosphorus... “

“Well done! Phosphorus is a mineral. The

phosphorus cycle is the biogeochemical cycle “I think it is a mineral.”
that describes the movement of phosphorus
through the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and
biosphere.”

“And for the last one, the Sulfur Cycle.”

“The sulfur cycle is the collection of processes

by which sulfur moves between rocks,
waterways and living systems.”

“The sulfur cycle describes the movement of

sulfur through the geosphere and biosphere.
Sulfur is released from rocks through
weathering, and then assimilated by microbes
and plants. It is then passed up the food chain
and assimilated by plants and animals, and
released when they decompose and then the
cycle goes on”

“Biogeochemical cycles are natural occurrences

that happen in our ecosystems. These
occurrences are important in the cycling of
materials to make these materials available to
living organisms for their maintenance and
survival. However, excessive amounts of these
materials in the environment can also be
harmful, contributing to occurrences such as
acid rain and greenhouse effect. Industrial and
human interventions may take these materials
out of the cycle and therefore not recycled.
Hence, they cannot be used by organisms.

E. Elaborate
1. Generalization

Let’s do a vocabulary review.

“What is Biogeochemical Cycle?” “A biogeochemical cycle

“What are the Biogeochemical Cycles?”

“ Water Cycle, Oxygen-

Carbon Cycle, Nitrogen

Cycle and Sulfur Cycle.”
“Explain the importance of Biogeochemical
Cycles

“These occurrences are

important in the cycling
of materials to make
these
materials available to
living organisms for their
maintenance and
survival.”
