APPLICATIONS OF POLYGON
PART I.
MELC 11: Solves problems involving sides and angles of a polygon
properties and relationship of the sum of the interior and exterior angles of a polygon,
and the number of sides of a polygon. This will give you a deeper understanding on
problem solving involving polygons with the help of several examples and solutions.
This will help you understand important polygon relationships to solve home work

IIlustrative Examples
Example 1: Find the sum of the measures of the interior angles of a decagon.
¿( 8)180 °
¿ 1440 °
1
Solution: Since the polygon is heptagon; so, n=7
(n − 2) 180° (7 − 2)180 °
=
n 7
(5)x 180°
¿
7
900 °
¿
7
¿ 128.57 °
Therefore, each interior angle of the heptagon is 128.57 ° .
¿( 6− 2)180 °
¿( 4) 180°
¿ 720 °
m∠Q=720 °−590 °
m∠Q=130 °
Therefore, ∠ Q=130 ° .
Example 4: The sum of the measures of an interior angles of a polygon is 2 160° . How
many sides does the polygon has?
2
Solution: Assume that the polygon has n sides.
2 160 °
n −2=
180 °
n −2=12
n=12+2
n=14
Solution:
¿(5 − 2) 180 °
¿(3) 180 °
¿ 54 0 °
The sum of the measures of an interior angles of a pentagon is 540 °. Now, Lets express the
statement “the interior angles add up to “540” as an equation.
3
This looks like : 33 ° +140° +(2 x)° + x °+(x +75)°=540°
This is a linear equation. Now, we can
solve. Collecting like terms on the
left-hand side, we get : 4 x+248=540 ° .
Subtract 248 from both sides,
we get: 4 x=292°
Finally, divide both sides by 4,
We get:
4 x 292°
=
4 4
x=73 °
So, If x=73 ° then, 2 x=2(73° )=146 ° and, x +75° =73 °+ 75° =148° .
Remember:
The sum of the measures of interior angles of a convex polygon with
n side is equal to (n-2)180°, where n is the number of sides of a
polygon
n=
∑ of the measures of the interior angles + 2
