DRAWN NO. MWSN-107-3 After-Sales Service Div.

Low load operation Dept. Manager K. Kubo
Section Chief N. Inoue
Drawn By S. Umeno
ENGINE TYPE S26MC, S/L35MC, S42MC, S46MC-C
Revision3 : Reviewed overall (April 15, 2013)

We would like to inform about “Low load operation”.

“Low load operation” is 10%-40% load running.

1. Load range

1) Operational load range

It is possible to use both conventional type and slide type on 40% - 100% load.
The engine must be equipped with the slide type fuel valves when operating engine in the
range between 10% to 40% load in the long-term. (S46MC-C is fitted with slide type valve
as standard equipment.)
However, the possible load range for continuous operation at low load should be
determined by actual condition even though the engine with the slide type fuel valves.
Frequent inspection of the scavenge air manifold and exhaust gas way for fouling should
be performed during long-term low load operation.
Regarding retrofitting of slide type fuel valve, please refer to service note for MWSN-143.

2) Recommended load range

If the case that any improved is not applied, the engine can be operated until 40% load
with both fuel injection valves. In order to completely avoid the repeatedly start-stop of the
Aux. Blower, the lowest load has been recommended as the guiding scavenging pressure. It
should be kept at least 0.1 MPa.
Please refer to “2. - 2) Auxiliary blower adjustment”.

2. Precautions for low load operation

1) Inspection of exhaust gas way and the cylinder condition.

During the long-term low load operation, soot formation in the scavenge air way and
exhaust gas ways may increase and consequently impair the cylinder condition. Therefore,
we recommend checking the engine condition in accordance with following procedure and
confirm if the engine condition is not deteriorated during long-term low load operation.
As a result of inspection, take measures such as shortening of the maintenance and
cleaning interval based on the actual condition.

[First time inspection]

Inspection time : after approx. 24 hours since starting the low load operation
Inspection part : all piston crowns (piston ring lands, combustion surface),
scavenging air receiver and scavenging air box

[Second time inspection and after]

Inspection interval : every one week
Inspection part : all piston crowns (piston ring lands, combustion surface),
scavenging air receiver and scavenging air box
turbo charger protection grid (in exhaust gas receiver),
exhaust gas economizer.

2) Auxiliary blower adjustment

The setting values of auxiliary blower automatically start and stop are the following.

Automatically start; 0.5kgf/cm2 (0.05MPa)

Automatically stop; 0.7kgf/cm2 (0.07MPa)

Please note as follows to avoid the damage of flap valve and thermal relay on auxiliary
blower starter.
1. Avoid using auxiliary blower in the range to repeat the start and the stop by the
automatic operation.
2. Keep the engine load that auxiliary blower continued stop or running.
3. Change over to the manual position according to the condition. Pay attention to
electric current value (over load).
It is preferable that you have spare motor because the motor is continually
working below 40% load.

3) Engine load up

During long-term low load operation, the engine load should be increased periodically
(every 12-24 hours) up to C.S.O load and keep it at least 30 minutes in order to clean the
exhaust gas ways. In additional, turbocharger solid-particle cleaning should be carried out
after engine load up. (K-1 DATA “CLEANING OF TURBOCHARGER”)
Avoid the main engine load up rapidly.

Although the engine load within 40% - C.S.O is not low load operation, in our experience,
it is recommended cleaning the gas way by engine load up till around C.S.O periodically.

4) Cylinder oil feed rate (Mechanical type)

Cylinder oil feed rate is changed proportionally to the engine revolution. Cylinder feed rate
can be adjusted to the lower level that is proportional to the mean effected pressure when
the cylinder liner condition is good and the cylinder oil feed rate is in excess.
However, the cylinder oil feed rate should be kept higher than 40% of M.C.O. rate at any
time.
Please adjust to return the feed rate to the normal level, after low load operation is
finished.
As regards the cylinder oil feed rate operation. Please refer to the instruction book.
(Vol.1 Operation and data, K-1 DATA)
If long-term low load operation in service is expected previously, the following option can
be effective.
The electronically controlled Alpha lubricator system

5) Avoid running within barred engine speed ranges.

6) Keep jacket cooling water outlet temperature at 80 - 85 Ê (standard temperature).

7) Consult the engine builder when using long-term low load operation below 10% load.

8) Adjust the pressure of seal air for exhaust valve of S42MC, S46MC-C to 0.05MPa from
0.03MPa by relay valve for seal air.

3. The “Technical File” must be modified and be approved by the administration of the flag state
or its agency before any change of the engine components like fuel valve, which influences the
NOx emission properties.
