Section I
Question1
a. State 2 factors affecting the turning effect of a force. [2]

b. State the position of centre of gravity of the following: [2]

c. A body moves in a circular path. How much work is done by the body?
Give reason. [2]

d. A boy weighing 350 N climbs up 30 steps each 20 cm high in 1 minute. Calculate :

(i) The work done and (ii) the power spent. [2]

e. State the energy changes in the following cases [2]

(i) Burning coal
(ii) Steam engine

Question 2
a. Draw a labelled diagram of of the pulley that has an ideal mechanical advantage
equal to 2 [2]

b. What is lateral displacement? State 2 factors affecting lateral displacement [2]

c. The diagram given shows a right angled isosceles prism with a ray of light
incident on the side AB. Copy the diagram and show the path of the ray of light in
and out of the glass prism showing the angles at each surface ( The critical angle of
the glass is 42º ) [2]

 d. A bird is flying at the height of 3m above the surface of a river while a fish is 4m
below the water surface. At what depth would the fish appear to bird? [2]

e. Is the deviation produced by a prism independent of the colour of light passing

through it? Explain your answer. [2]
Section II
Question 3

a. (i) State work – energy theorem [1]

(ii) A ball of mass 0.5 kg slows down from a speed of 5m/s to that of 3m/s.
Calculate the change in kinetic energy of the ball. [2]

b. (i) State principle of moments [1]

(ii) A spanner used to tighten a nut has a long handle. Why? [2]

c. (i) Draw a diagram of a block and tackle system of pulleys of velocity ratio 4
indicating clearly the points of application and directions of load and tension. [2]

(ii) A pulley system with velocity ratio 3 and efficiency 80%. Calculate the
mechanical advantage and the effort required to raise a load of 300N. [2]

Question 4.
a. A fish is looking at a 1m tall tree at the edge of a pond. Will the plant appear to
the fish shorter or taller than its actual height? Draw a ray diagram to support
your answer. [3]

b. (i) Define refractive index of a medium with respect of light [1]

(ii) Explain the statement ‘critical angle of diamond is 24º’. [2]

c. (i) Give 2 differences between normal reflection and total internal reflection. [2]

(ii) A star appears twinkling. Give reasons. [2]
