• How keyboard works • All modern computers have a variant
– Keyboard controller detects a key press • Allows users to select objects
– Controller sends a code to the CPU – Pointer moved by the mouse
• Code represents the key pressed
• Mechanical mouse
– Controller notifies the operating system
– Rubber ball determines direction and speed
– Operating system responds
– The ball often requires cleaning
– Controller repeats the letter if held

– Light shown onto mouse pad – Actions involve pointing to an object
– Reflection determines speed and direction – Clicking selects the object
– Requires little maintenance – Clicking and holding drags the object
– Releasing an object is a drop

– Modern mice include a scroll wheel
