What is Desktop Publishing:

Graphic Images:
Pixel:

Text Characteristics:
- Leading: spaces between lines of text
- Tracking: overall spacing between letters
- Kerning: spaces between individual letter pairs
- Baseline: foundation upon which text rests on
Page Characteristics:
- Margin: distance between text and edge of page
- Bleed: distance between edge of printing and edge of pages
- Gutter: space between columns or between facing pages
Paragraph Characteristics:
- Alignment/Justification of paragraphs
- Pull Quote emphasizes a key point of an article and repeats it
- Text Wrap/Flow/Runaround is the manner that text wraps around image
Printing Characteristic:
- Ream: 500 sheets of paper
- Stock weight: paper measurement in pounds (ream weight at paper’s basic sheet size ranging from 17”
x 22” to 25” x 38”)
- Crop Marks: cross hairs signifying edge of page
- Proof: print used to check if everything is right
- Choke: slight shrinking of colours to compensate for ink spreading
- Overprint: intentionally printing one colour over another to create new colours
- Knockout: leaving an area unprinted to reveal the paper beneath
- Separation: page divided into individual colour channels for printing on press (grey, magenta, yellow,
blue)
- Registration: alignment of individual colours on page
- Trapping: overlapping colours to compensate for mis-registration
