Composites Problem Set 4

Problem 1: An element of a balanced orthotropic lamina is subjected to the following state of

stress as shown in the figure:
 x = 100 MPa  y = -50 MPa  xy = 50 MPa

The properties of the lamina are as follows:

E1 = 70 GPa E2 = 70 GPa
G12 = 5.0 GPa 12 = 0.25
S 1T = S 1C = S 2T = S 2C = 560 MPa
S 12 = 25 MPa
Using the maximum stress criterion, determine whether or not failure will occur.

Solution
Given the state of stress, the first step in applying any failure criterion is to transform the stresses
to the material (1-2) coordinates.

Therefore, the lamina will fail due to shear stress exceeding the ultimate shear strength.

Problem 2: An element of a balanced orthotropic lamina is subjected to the following state of

stress as shown in Problem 7.1:
 x = 100 MPa  y = -50 MPa  xy = 50 MPa
The properties of the lamina are as follows:
E1 = 70 GPa E2 = 70 GPa
G12 = 5.0 GPa 12 = 0.25
S 1T = S 1C = S 2T = S 2C = 560 MPa
S 12 = 25 MPa
Using the Tsai-Wu criterion, determine whether or not failure will occur.

Solution
Given the state of stress, the first step in applying any failure criterion is to transform the stresses
to the material (1-2) coordinates.
