Within a country, a government can undertake this initiative through an assessment of its country’s
ability to provide its citizens with food. Factors such as economic recessions and natural disasters can
affect a country’s capacity that its citizens are well facilitated in theevent of a food shortage. The level of
food insecurity can also be assessed from evaluating the accessibility of citizens, to sources of food.
China’s inability to provide food for its people during the current economic recession, serves as an
example of food insecurity.

Another core aspect of promoting food security, entails educating individuals and enterprises about
sustainable agricultural practices. In the Caribbean, farmers engage in a process known as ‘Slash and
Burn’. It is used to lear land of vegetation and involves cutting trees and other forms of flora. Once all
trees have been cut, they are burnt and this process results in the loss of fertile land. Which renders the
area useless,for the cultivation of crops.

To promote food security among the Caribbean nations, would require that those engaged in the
production of food are knowledgeable of the ways in which they can sustain production. Sustainable
agricultural practices require farming methods which preserve the quality of soil and vegetation. To
educate individual and enterprises mandates that the government is aware of the methods which best
suit its farming industries. Sustainable agriculture refers to the production of agricultural products which
can serve the country both in the present and in the future. Government’s will have to ensure that these
practices meet the needs of both .

Subsequently, establishing measures to maintain food security is necessary. Countries which belong
to the Caribbean region need to implement laws and other guidelines which will seek to maintain food

Promoting food security in the Caribbean region is a complex and challenging process. However
without it, countries will face problems to aid their population in times of need. If a country can
successfully ascertain an idea of its food insecurity, educate its people about correct farming methods
and maintain laws and rules to constantly improve its situation, food security will be attainable.
Promoting food security is essential to the survival of the Caribbean region.
