GE 115: Purposive Communication Preliminary Examination

The test, conducted among first-year students taking up Diploma in


Hospitality Management, was made by Ms. Jean Ann Catanduanes, a college
instructor at Asian Development Foundation College, for the subject GE 115:
Purposive Communication.

This 35-item test is in a multiple-choice format, conducted through the


Edmodo app/website. Students were given one hour to answer the questions. The
coverage included four topics, namely: (1) Communication Models; (2)
Communication Ethics; and (3) Communication and Globalization.
The table below shows the summary of the item analysis results.

Based on the illustration, eight (8) test items are retained, which means no
revision or deletion shall take place. Seven (7) items are suggested to be revised
if necessary. Nine (9) items need to increase their level of difficulty. Two (2) items
are recommended to have minor revision on the stem or choices. One (1) item
may need revision on the stem or choices. Eight (8) items need major revision on
the stem and/or choices.

The items are well-distributed according to the topics discussed. The


instructions are clearly laid out. The test is generally objective, considering that the
questions are based on the topics discussed. The language is simple and
straightforward. Through Edmodo’s built-in system, the scoring and marking
scheme are unmistakable. The time-allotment is enough; the students are given
one (1) minute and thirty (30) seconds to answer each question. The layout is
commendable.

Although the test covers the topics discussed, its level of difficulty is not in
congruence with the students’ year level; it is expected of them to understand
more complex concepts. The questions are knowledge-level and lack adequacy
in determining the target skills.

In conclusion, the test is generally acceptable. It has the qualities of a well-


prepared test and meets the standards of a good test. On the other hand, the
teacher needs to improve on the test’s level of difficulty to ensure that the
students are able to acquire the skills they are expected to develop and master.
She may revisit Bloom’s Taxonomy for further references.
