ASSIGNMENT

SATELLITE ORBITS
1. OBJECTIVES

At the end of this assignment, the students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate different type of satellites orbits by using the SAT-LAB simulator.
2. Describe different type of satellites.
2. EQUIPMENTS

1. Personal Computer (desktop/laptop)

2. MATLAB with Mapping Toolbox
3. SAT-LAB Simulator

3. PROCEDURES

Download the SAT-LAB simulator and its documentation from

https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/63344-sat-lab-a-matlab-
graphical-user-interface-for-simulating-and-visualizing-keplerian-satellite-orbits

Study the manual for SAT-LAB simulator. Run the simulator and familiarize yourself
with the simulator by exploring all the information provided in the simulator.

PART 1: ORBIT SIMULATION AND VISUALIZATION

1. By referring to the simulator manual, simulate:
a. Geostationary orbit
b. Tundra orbit
c. Molniya orbit
d. Low Earth orbit
2. For each orbit, show the screenshots of the orbit and explain its Keplerian elements that
are shown in the simulator.

PART 2: ORBIT VISUALIZATION OF OPERATIONAL SATELLITES

1. Choose and simulate 1 satellite from each category:
a. Communication satellites
b. Scientific satellites
c. Weather and Earth resources satellites
d. Navigation satellites
2. For each satellite, show the screenshots of its orbit.
3. Prepare a 2-page description for each satellite.

Prepare a report based on the procedures above. You will also be evaluated based on your
ability to function effectively as a team. A part of your report must also describe functions
of each team member, and proof of collaboration between team members such as record of
discussions, screenshots of team meetings etc.
Refer to the marking rubrics attached to get an idea how the assignment will be assessed.
