COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering
Final Examination in Geotechnical Engineering I
1st Semester, SY 2021-2022

READ the INSTRUCTIONS FIRST: Write your name in the format Surname, Given Name Middle Name. Write your solutions orderly
and neatly on a separate sheet of A4 bond paper. Always round off your final answers to two decimal places. Encircle your final
answers. Erasures/Alterations means wrong. Good Luck!

1. Three piezometers have been installed in the confined aquifer having a uniform thickness of 4.6 m. and a hydraulic
conductivity of 3.6 𝑥 10−4 𝑚/𝑠. Compute the ff.:
a. Hydraulic Gradient
b. Transmissivity in 𝑚2 /𝑑𝑎𝑦
c. Flow Rate in 𝑚3 /𝑑𝑎𝑦

2. A 300 mm diameter test well penetrates 24 m. below the static water table. After 24 hours of pumping at 69 Liters
per second, the water level in an observation well at a distance of 90 m. from the test well is lowered by 0.60 m.
and the other observation well at a distance of 34 m. from the test well, the drawdown is 1.2 m.
a. Hydraulic Conductivity in m/day
b. Transmissibility in 𝑚2 /𝑑𝑎𝑦
c. Transmissivity in 𝑚2 /𝑑𝑎𝑦 if there is a confined aquifer of 8 m. thick

3. The figure shows layers of soil in a tube that is 100 mm x 100 mm in cross section water is supplied to maintain a
constant head difference of 300 mm. across the sample.
𝐾𝐴 = 10−2 𝑐𝑚/𝑠
𝐾𝐵 = 3𝑥10−3 𝑐𝑚/𝑠
𝐾𝐶 = 4.9𝑥10−4 𝑐𝑚/𝑠
Compute the ff.:
a. Equivalent Coefficient of Permeability in cm/s
b. Hydraulic Gradient
c. ℎ𝐴 in mm
d. ℎ𝐵 in mm
e. Rate of Water Supply in 𝑐𝑚3 ⁄ℎ𝑟

4. A channel runs almost parallel to a river as shown on the figure. The water level in the river has an elevation of 36
m. and the elevation of the channel is 33 m. The river and channel are 600 m. apart and a pervious formation of
average thickness of 9 m. and coefficient of permeability of 2.22 𝑥 10−3 𝑐𝑚/𝑠 joins them together. Compute the
ff.:
a. Hydraulic Gradient
b. Seepage Velocity in 𝑚/𝑑𝑎𝑦 if the pervious medium has the ff. properties:
𝐺𝑠 = 2.72 & 𝛾𝑠𝑎𝑡 = 19.86 𝑘𝑁/𝑚3
c. Void Ratio if seepage velocity equals 0.048 m/day

5. Compute the following on the base of a masonry dam shown with its corresponding flow nets:
a. Q in 𝑚3 ⁄𝑚𝑖𝑛
b. Pressure Drop in m/drop
c. Seepage/Uplift Force in kN

6. The depth of water outside the cofferdam as shown in the figure is 10 ft. and the penetration of the sheet piles below
the original surface of the sand is 18 ft. The water level in the ditch is 20 ft. below the outside water level. If 𝐾 =
5𝑥10−3 𝑐𝑚/𝑠, what will be the seepage into the ditch per foot length of the entire cofferdam in liters/second.
