System Overview
 Motronic means controlling the electronic
ignition (map controlled electronic ignition
timing) and fuel injection (L-Jetronic)

 Bosch started series production of the first

Motronic system in 1979.

 More stringent demands for clean emissions

gradually led to widespread use of Motronic
system

Motoronic versions

 M-Motronic: control the fuel and ignition system

 ME-Motronic: expands M-Motronic by providing

electronic throttle control (torque structure)

 MED-Motronic: expands ME-Motronic by furnishing

closed-loop control of GDI

 MEG-Motronic: with integrated transmission control

(not in extensive use, as the demands on hardware are
considerable)

Air system component
 Throttle valve(16) controls the air flow rate flowing
through the intake manifold to the cylinders by the
position of the accelerator pedal

 Idle actuator (15) allows air to bypass the throttle valve

at a defined mass air flow.

 Sensors for detecting engine load (air charge):

1. Air-flow sensor
2. Hot-wire air-mass meter
3. Hot-film air-mass sensor (measure backflow)
4. Intake-manifold pressure sensor
5. Throttle-valve sensor

Ignition system component

 Ignition coil

 Spark plugs

a: module with two dual-

spark ignition coils, i.e. with
four HT outlets for four spark
plugs.

b: Single spark ignition coil

(compact-coil version) with
plug-on spark plug.
