LET'S ANALYZE (PP. 7 - 8) REFER TO WEEK 8 TO 9

Activity 9.

Getting acquainted with the concepts in biotechnology and biodiversity, it matters that you understand
their relevance in the society. Thus, you are required to explain briefly the following questions:

1. What role does the environment play in addressing the needs of a society?

Answer: The environment addresses the needs of the living beings by providing the ecosystem services.
The environment provides water, air, soil, minerals and other natural resources, which are necessary for
the survival, growth and development of the living organisms.

2. How can people maintain the rich biodiversity in nature?

Answer: One of the most effective ways to maintain biodiversity is to protect areas that are biodiverse.
One of the largest threats to biodiversity is habitat loss and degradation, thus protecting these areas is
very important.

3. In your own words, how is an organism’s genome manipulated?

Answer: Traditionally, humans have manipulated genomes indirectly by controlling breeding and
selecting offspring with desired traits. Genetic engineering involves the direct manipulation of one or
more genes. But in my opinion, it is to make use the desired traits of an organism to produce it from any
other organism.

4. What are the pros and cons of genetically modifying crops?

Answer: Pros of GMOs

* GMOs may have fewer pesticides.

- Many GMO crops have been altered to be less vulnerable to insects and other pests. For example, Bt-
corn is a GMO crop that has a gene added from Bacillus thuringiensis, a naturally occurring soil bacteria.
This gene causes the corn to produce a protein that kills many pests and insects, helping to protect the
corn from damage.

* GMOs are usually cheaper.

- this means that farmers can produce the same amount of food using less land, less water, and fewer
pesticides than conventional crops.

Because they can save on resources, food producers can also charge lower prices for GMO foods. In
some cases, the costs of foods like corn, beets, and soybeans may be cut by 15% to 30%.
Cons of GMOs

*GMOs may cause allergic reactions

-Because GMO foods contain DNA from other organisms, it's possible that the new DNA can trigger
allergies in people who wouldn't normally be allergic to the food.

*GMOs may increase antibiotic resistance.

-When GMO scientists insert new DNA into plant cells, they will often add in an additional gene that
makes the modified cells resistant to antibiotics. They can then use an antibiotic to kill off any plant cells
that didn't successfully take in the new DNA.

5. Will you eat GMOs? Why or why not?

Answer: Yes, Because first and foremost, I really love food, and Base on the study GMOs used less
pesticide means less harmful to the people and scientist is doing their best to make the GMOs food
much more safety to eat than natural foods. And there's no evidence that a crop is dangerous to eat just
because it is GMO.
