GP1: 2nd Quarter – Activity 1

Work, Energy, and Energy Conservation

1. A woman pulls a sled with her son (total mass of 80 kg) with a force of 180 N angled at
200 from the horizontal. The woman is able to move the sled 5 m along the horizontal.
a) How much work is being done by the woman?
b) What is the sled’s velocity after it has moved 5 m, assuming that it started from rest
and there is no friction?

2. A 2-kg block is pushed against a spring with spring constant, k = 500 N/m, compressing
the spring by 20 cm. The block is then released, and the spring projects it along a
frictionless horizontal surface and then up a frictionless incline of angle 45 0. What is the
maximum height it travels up the incline before momentarily coming to rest?

3. A small motor is used to operate a lift that raises a load of bricks weighing 1200 N to a
height of 15 m in 30 s. How much power is used for this task by the motor?
