A. Research Background
listening is an active process in which listeners select and interpret information which
come from auditory and visual clue (Rubin in Helgesen and Brown (2007:3)

defines scaffolding as “the distance between what children can do by


themselves and the next learning that they can be helped to achieve with
competent assistance.” Essentially, it is an instructional strategy which ensures
students to gain confidence and take control of the task or parts of the task as soon
as he or she is willing and able to (Raymond, 2000:176)

Why Scaffolding Principles in English Listening Skills?


 Offering explanations
 Inviting students participation
 Giving verification of students
 Inviting students to contribute clues

B. Research Problem
How can scaffolding improve the students listening skills of class VIII B in SMPN 1
Ngemplak?

C. Research purposes
In relation to the formulation of the problems, the objective of this
research is to improve students’ listening skills by implementation of
scaffolding principles.

D. Significance of Research
Theoretical Benefits = give valuable information and
enrich the knowledge on how to improve students’ listening skills through
the use of scaffolding principles.
Practical benefits = the english department of Yogyakarta state university, the
teachers, and students, the research himself, for the other research.

F. Research Methodology
Qualitative research is multimethod in focus, involving an interpretive, naturalistic approach
to its subject matter. This means that qualitative researchers study things in their natural
settings, attempting to make sense of, or interpret, phenomena in terms of the meanings
people bring to them.
Quantitative data is information about quantities, and therefore numbers, and qualitative data
is descriptive, and regards phenomenon which can be observed but not measured, such as
language.
