CASE STUDY

TITLE: R.E. CONSTRUCTION: It’s now or never

Engineer Romeo Estabillo took a board examination last 1981 and passed it. He
decided to organize his own construction firm where he started to accept projects for
constructing residential houses and buildings. At the start, he hired two assistant that
could help him run the firm. One is Mr. Silvino Santiago which his main task was as a
draftsman that caters various contracts, cost of materials, building plan, etc. The second
assistant is Mr. Romulo Mamaril, which was assigned to different administrative
activities. As early as in third year of operation, Engr. Estabillo was already leading the
operation in his newly built office and this time, he hired two more female employees.
As Engr. Estabillo reviewed his company’s payroll, and found out that he has 20
employees: six engineers, two draftsmen, ten administrative personnel, one messenger
and one security guard. By June 1996, he felt that his business was continuously
growing and decided to add the services of four additional civil engineers. He has
doubts in his decision that he may not be able to perform his function as the supervisor.
He is wondering on how he will go about solving the problem.

Is hiring four additional civil engineers a good decision for Engr. Estabillo? There
are advantages in hiring additional four civil engineers such as, it can lessen the duties
of his six present civil engineers, and more clients can be accommodated by them. On
the other hand, the disadvantages are that financial risk due to the additional cost for
another four civil engineers’ salary and an extra pain for Engr. Estabillo to supervise a
large number of employees.

The best thing for Engr. Estabillo is to conduct a review on his construction firm’s
status and check if it is really gaining a profit. But if he think that his business is on track
to grow, then it is advisable for him to hire an additional workers. Then decision making
process will come in. He needs to find employees that is expert and has a capability of
doing the job. And also, he needs to involve his employees to the implementation of his
decisions to ask further suggestions and recommendations. If he wants his business to
be successful, then he should take the risk. But if he thinks that he cannot
accommodate the entire operation, then hiring a supervisor who is qualified enough for
the job is the best solution.
