Schools Division of Bacolod City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed
to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Medieval Art Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal
or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to
the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Medieval Art Tradition Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue
learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with
meaningful andengaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner,

a. Study. To understand Medieval Art; Byzantine Painting

The lively styles of paintings which had been invented in Greek and Rome lived on in
Byzantium but this time for Christian subjects.

By the 11th century, the Greek and Oriental styles seem to blend together in
magnificent, imposing images, which adorned the churches in large and small forms.

Byzantine art (4th - 15th century CE) is generally characterized by a move away from
the naturalism of the Classical tradition towards the more abstract and universal, there is
a definite preference for two-dimensional representations, and those artworks which
contain a religious message predominate.
Byzantine art preferred stylized imagery over naturalistic depictions. The aim of
their art was to inspire a sense of wonder and admiration for the church. In this way, their
use of graceful, floating figures, and golden tesserae emphasized the otherworldliness of
the religious subjects.
The mature Byzantine style, evolved through the stylization and standardization of
late Classical forms of Early Christian art, was based on the dynamic of lines and flat areas
of colour rather than form.

Romanesque Painting

In the history of Christian art, the term "Romanesque" is a rather vague and
principally architectural term that has been extended to other fine art disciplines such
as painting and sculpture. Romanesque painting is characterized by a new formality of
style, largely devoid of the naturalism and humanism of either its classical antecedents
or its Gothic successors. Combining features of Roman and Byzantine buildings and
other local traditions, Romanesque architecture exhibits massive quality, thick walls,
round arches, sturdy piers , groin vaults , large towers, and symmetrical plans.
The art of the period was characterized by a vigorous style in both painting and
sculpture. Romanesque painting style is simpler and more spiritual than
previous styles.

It has a remarkable variety of artistic

traditions such as modeling and treatment of
faces and draperies that follow Byzantine
convention while the refreshingly decorative
feeling comes from southern French styles. It
also shows traces of Mozarabic influence
(Arabize influence) through elongated oval
faces, large staring eyes and long noses, figures
against flat colored bands and heavy outlining.

Gothic Painting

Gothic art was a style of medieval art that developed in Northern France out
of Romanesque art in the 12th century AD, led by the concurrent development
of Gothic architecture. Primary media in the Gothic period included sculpture, panel
painting, stained glass, fresco and illuminated manuscripts.
In its fully developed form, it is best seen in the work of Simone Martini of Siena
(1284–1344) and Gentile da Fabriano (1370–1427), whose paintings are characterized
by a formalized sweetness and grace, an elegance and richness of detail, and an
idealized quality that was missing in Giotto’s stark work. The tempera altarpieces of
Fra Angelico bridge the gap between the International Gothic and Renaissance styles
of painting, making use of Gothic elaboration, gold leaf, and brilliant color.
