Reading
J Five sentences have been removed from the story. Choose
from the sentences A-H the one which fills each gap (1-5).
There are three extra sentences which you do not need
to use.

The Hawaiian Islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean are famous for their unspoilt natural beauty. 1 The islands
are also home to the ohi’a – a type of tree with beautiful fiery red or yellow flowers called ‘lehua’. The tribes from the
islands tell a story about how the tree was formed and why people should never pick its flowers.

One night, Ohi'a attended a dance in his village. Ohi'a was a tall strong man who always came first in the sports they
played on the islands. 2 When the two first saw each other, they immediately liked each other, and shortly
afterwards, they were married. Ohi'a built a home for his new bride, and they lived in peace and happiness.
After some time, though, Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes, was walking near the couple’s home. 3 As soon
as she saw him, she wanted to talk to him. So, she changed herself into a human and approached him. However,
Ohi'a told her that he was happily married. 4 When Pele saw the two of them together, she felt extremely jealous
of their happiness, and angrily transformed Ohi’a into an ugly twisted tree. Lehua was heartbroken, and begged Pele to
turn Ohi’a back into a human, but the goddess ignored her.
5 So, as Lehua knelt down by the tree, they transformed her into a beautiful red flower. They placed this flower on
top of the twisted tree, so that the couple would always be together.

This is why the ohi'a has such beautiful flowers – and locals say you should never pluck them from the tree. Doing so
will cause heavy rain - like the tears of Lehua, crying because she has been separated from her husband.

A At the same time, Lehua arrived to give her husband his midday meal.
B She hadn’t met this handsome man before – and was curious to know who he was.
C From their sandy beaches to their tall green volcanic mountains, this place really is paradise on Earth.
D He was also the tribe leader’s son, and a brave warrior.
E There, she noticed Ohi'a at work.
F Another person attending the event was Lehua, who was gentle and sweet, and famous for her beauty.
G Instead, satisfied at the pain she had caused, she flew away, up to the tall mountains.
H The other gods saw what had happened and felt sorry for the young couple.
