IMPLEMENTATION OF ENHANCED WAKE TURBULENCE
SEPARATION (eWTS) MINIMA
REFER ALSO TO LATEST NOTAMS
The implementation of the new minima is subject to Regulatory approval and planned for 21st
FEB 2021. Any postponement of the activation date of the AIP SUP 40/2020 will be advised by
NOTAM.

1. DUBAI CTA ENHANCED WAKE TURBULENCE SEPARATION (eWTS) MINIMA

The introduction of eWTS minima allows a more efficient set of WT grouping. eWTS reduces
the required separation depending upon the leading and the following ACFT, maintains
required separation in a number of situations, and increases separation for the smallest,
most vulnerable ACFT as compared to today.

The eWTS scheme introduces two groups for HEAVY category ACFT namely B and C and three
groups for MEDIUM ACFT namely D, E and F. It also integrates the SUPER JUMBO/HEAVY
category or group namely A.
Table 1: ACFT group designators based on MTOW & wingspan (eWTS Group criteria)

G ACFT types 41,006 lbs (18,600 kg) or less No wingspan criterion

The WT separation minima are:

for distance-based separations on approach (to RWY threshold) and departure which
will correspond with respect to the distance in nautical miles between two ACFT,
according to the eWTS group designator (see distance-based separation minima Table 2);
for time-based separations on departure which will correspond with respect to the time
interval in minutes and seconds between two ACFT, according to the eWTS Group
designator (see Time Based Separation Minima Table 3 & 4).

2. SEPARATION MINIMA IMPLEMENTATION

The eWTS minima will be applied in the approach and the departure phases of flight and are
to be applicable at an altitude of 6,000' and below.
The minima set out in Table 2 above shall be applied when:
1) an ACFT is operating directly behind another ACFT at the same altitude or less
than 1,000' below; or
2) both ACFT are using the same RWY, or parallel RWYs separated by less than
760m; or
3) an ACFT is crossing behind another ACFT, at the same altitude or less than
1,000' below.

of the first ACFT at the same altitude or less than 1,000' below.
3. IMPACT ON PILOT PROCEDURES
The implementation of eWTS minima will not affect pilot procedures in any way.

Approach Phase
In the approach phase pilots will probably notice the separation reduction. Consequently, it is
therefore important to comply with ATC speed instructions at all times particularly to maintain
the speed on final approach as assigned by ATC. If for any reason, a speed cannot be maintained
then the pilot must inform ATC as soon as possible.

IMPLEMENTATION OF ENHANCED WAKE TURBULENCE
SEPARATION (eWTS) MINIMA (Continued)
REFER ALSO TO LATEST NOTAMS
RWY Occupancy:
Arriving Aircraft
Pilots are instructed to minimise RWY occupancy time. Due to reduced separation minima
on final approach, it is mandatory that landing ACFT vacate the RWY as early as possible
in order to maximise RWY capacity. For arriving traffic, ATC will advise ACFT on final
approach of the expected RWY exit point. ACFT are expected to vacate the RWY
expeditiously and pilots are reminded to keep moving until the ACFT is completely clear
of the RWY.

Departing Aircraft
eWTS time based WT separation will be applied. If pilots require more separation than the
eWTS RECAT standard, or extra time for any other reason, advise ATC early PRIOR to entering
the runway, NOT when on the RWY. When informed, ATC will be able to make changes in the
departure sequence, if necessary, to minimise delays to other succeeding departures. Once
ATC issues a take-off clearance, if there is any unreasonable delay in the ACFT commencing
the take-off roll, ATC may cancel the take-off clearance and reposition the ACFT in the
departure sequence.
When cleared for take-off, the controller will expect and will have planned on seeing movement
within 8 to 10 seconds of the take-off clearance being issued.

4. FLIGHT PLANNING AND PHRASEOLOGY FOR INDICATION OF 'SUPER' OR 'HEAVY'

WAKE TURBULENCE
For ACFT in the ICAO SUPER or HEAVY WTC, the suffix of 'SUPER' or 'HEAVY' does not change.
On first transmission, the word 'SUPER' or 'HEAVY' shall still be included, as appropriate,
immediately after the ACFT call sign in the initial radiotelephony contact between such ACFT
and the ATS units.

5. LIVE TRIALS
Until final implementation of ICAO eWTS, Pilots/crews of all operators should be aware of the
reduced approach phase wake turbulence separation trials that are currently in progress
between:
EMIRATES Airlines Heavy Category ACFT in trail to other Heavy Category ACFT;
All B777 Heavy Category ACFT following other B777 Heavy Category ACFT; and
Flydubai Medium Category ACFT in trail to other Heavy Category ACFT.
Note: Periods when trial is active will be notified by ATIS.
