MODULE 4: LETS PLAY SPORTS!

I. OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this lesson, I can


a. Identify the different types of sports
b. Classify some sports as individual, Dual and Team sports

II. DISCUSSION:

Sport includes all forms of competitive physical


activity or games which, through casual or organized
participation, at least in part aim to use, maintain or
improve physical ability and skills while providing enjoyment
to participants, and in some cases, entertainment for
spectators. Sports can bring positive results to one's
physical health.
There are many different kinds of sports. Did you
know that according to the World Sports Encyclopedia,
there are 8,000 indigenous sports and sporting games? In
the summer Olympics, which is participated in by more than
200 countries around the world, about 25 – 28 sports are
played every 4 year, while over a dozen sports are played
in the Winter Olympics.

A sport can be classified as a/an:

1. Individual Sports:
Played by an individual competing by himself or
herself against other individuals.

Examples:

Bowling Fencing
• Badminton • Skiing
• Bowling • Snowboarding
• Boxing • Surfing
• Cycling • Swimming
• Figure skating • Track and field
• Golf • Wrestling

2. Dual Sports:
Played by two people against other individuals.
Examples:
Badminton
Played using strung rackets and a feathered shuttlecock by two
or four players on a rectangular court.

Chess
A two-player strategy board where two players play a checkered
board with 64 squares in an 8×8 grid. The game ends when the
king is captured or the opposing player surrenders
Table Tennis
Also known as ping pong, it is a smaller version of tennis that is
played using a lightweight ball and a small rubber bat.
Tennis
Another racket sport played by two or four players. The sport is
played using strung racket and a hollow rubber ball.
Volleyball
A usually team sport involving two groups of six players where
players use their hands to bat the ball back and forth

3. Team Sports:
Played by multiple players the court or field at
the same time, each one playing specific positions and
roles.
Examples:
baseball
a team game with nine players on each side, played on a field
with four bases connected to form a diamond. The object is to
score runs by batting the ball and running round the bases
basketball
a game played by two opposing teams of five players each,
usually on an indoor court. Points are scored by throwing the ball
through an elevated horizontal metal hoop
football
any of various games played with a round or oval ball and
usually based on two teams competing to kick, head, carry, or
otherwise propel the ball into each other's goal, territory, etc

hockey
a game played on a field by two opposing teams of 11 players
each, who try to hit a ball into their opponents' goal using long
sticks curved at the end
rugby or rugby football
a form of football played with an oval ball in which the
handling and carrying of the ball is permitted
softball
a variation of baseball using a larger softer ball, pitched
underhand
tug-of-war
a contest in which two people or teams pull opposite ends of a
rope in an attempt to drag the opposition over a central line
volleyball
a game in which two teams hit a large ball back and forth over
a high net with their hands
