Cell Model
Know:

Vocabulary: Cell, nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall, vacuole, cellulose

Facts:

1. Cell is the basic building unit of a body

Understand:

1. Cells have different organelles, each with its own specific function
2. Only plant cells have cell wall and chloroplast
3. Only animal cells have lysosomes

Do:

1. Make models of plants and animals and identify their organelles.

2. Observe the difference between plant and animal cells

Task 1: The Organelles

After this task, I will be able to

1. Identify the different organelles present in plant and animal cells

Material required: Rubber sheet outline, fevicol, modeling clays, beads, rubber
sheet cuts.

1. What are the common organelles present in plant and animal cells?

They both contain membrane-bound organelles such as the nucleus,

mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi apparatus and cytoplasm.

Task 2: Plant vs Animal Cells

After this task, I will be able to

1. Observe the difference in the cells, based on the organelles present
Grade -7

Material required:
Rubber sheet outline, fevicol, modeling clays, beads, rubber sheet cuts.

1. Write down Present/Absent as per the presence of organelles in plant and

animal cells in the spaces provided.

Component Animal cell Plant cell

Cell wall Absent Present (formed of

cellulose)
Shape Round (irregular shape) Rectangular (fixed
shape)
Vacuoles One or more small vacuoles One, large central
(much smaller than plant cells). vacuole taking up 90% of
cell volume.
Centrioles Present in all animal cells Only present in lower
plant forms.
Chloroplast Animal cells don't have Plant cells have
chloroplasts chloroplasts because
they make their own
food.
Cytoplasm Present Present
Endoplasmic Present Present
reticulum
Ribosome’s Present Present
Mitochondria Present Present
Plastids Absent Present
Golgi Present Present
Apparatus
Cell (Plasma) only cell membrane cell wall and a cell
membrane membrane
Micro tubules/ Present Present
Microfilaments
Lysosomes Lysosomes occur in cytoplasm. Lysosomes usually not
evident.
Grade -7

Nucleus Present Present

Peroxisomes Present Present

2. Four pupils observed some cells on a slide with a microscope. They

recorded the parts of the cell they could identify in the table below.

Name of pupils Cell parts identified

Arun Cell membrane, nucleus
Bhanu Nucleus, cytoplasm
Chandu Chloroplast, nucleus
Dravid Cell wall, chloroplast, nucleus

Which of them could have observed an animal cell?

a) Arun and Chandu

b) Arun and Bhanu

c) Bhanu and Dravid

d) Bhanu and Chandu

Give reasons for your answer:

Chloroplasts are absent in animal cells.

3. Match organelles to their shapes.

Extended Learning:(Open)

1. Working mechanism of antibiotics exploits the difference in nature of a certain

organelle of cell. Find out about it.

2. Cell walls are present in bacteria, protozoans, plants, fungi. Are all these cell
walls similar in function and nature?

3. There are free floating ribosomes and membrane bound ribosomes in a cell. Do
they carry out similar functions or they differ? Explore and find out.

HOTS questions:

1. Do all the cells in the body have the same structure and functions?
Grade -7

Yes. Only at the embryonic stage, all stem cells have same structure and
functions. During differentiation, they acquire specific receptors on their
membranes, and become specialized to perform a function.

2. How do the different cells become specialized?

Differentiation is the process by which unspecialized structures become

modified and specialized for performing specific functions. Differentiation
begins as soon as the cells have been formed. When cells become
specialized to perform a particular function they often lose the ability to
carry out other functions.

3. Which organelle is helpful in the process of photosynthesis?

Chloroplast is the organelle which plays a major role in the process of

photosynthesis.
