ABSTRACT
Our project will be designed to tackle on the current situation of the Covid-19 pandemic. We plan to build in a
couple of mask dispensers on school campuses here in Hawaii. Our goal is to successfully incorporate these
dispensers on both the grade school and high school campuses by the end of this school year. This outcome
will benefit the community as a whole by helping to reduce the spread of the virus. We understand that this isn’t
a cure but masking up is a big preventative step towards slowing the spread. Students on campus endure long
days here on campus and these disposable masks aren’t very durable, in other words it breaks easily and once
they break, many students don’t carry extra masks. By having these mask dispensers here on campus, students
don’t have to worry about what happens if their masks break, or if their families can’t supply them a clean mask,
then they are more than welcome to take one. This is also perfect for those people who do sports here on
campus, and if they need to change masks during a practice, it is available. Our project is based on a trust
system. We are trusting that those people taking masks aren’t abusing the free system and are only taking one

STATEMENT OF NEED
The issue that we are addressing is the fact that some students don’t bring extra masks to school, and if so
happen their mask gets dirty or if it breaks they don’t have to worry. Masking up is a Covid-19 protocol, and
with the cases rising each day, it is important to ensure that everyone has a mask that is in good condition,
not one that is completely stretched out from overuse, and not one that is nearly about to break. Our mask
dispensers are necessary because of the fact that disposable mask break easily and once they break and
someone doesn’t have an extra one then we have a problem. If we were to have mask dispensers around
campus this can eliminate this problem, and make our campus one step safer for everyone. Especially since
masks are a mandate and a law, ensuring that our school has extra masks that someone can take if they
need one is necessary. When everyone wears a mask and has a mask, we as a community benefit from this
by protecting ourselves and those around us. This issue hasn’t been addressed sufficiently in the past
because disposable masks is a staple in our lives today and the demand is so high, and as a result it’s hard
for people or companies to give them out for free. We see a couple of metro buses and trains having mask
dispensers in the mainland but these were only trials and they haven’t really continued with this project.
Some problems that were noted were people were taking advantage and taking more than they need, once
again because in some areas masks are hard to find, expensive for some families, and they are in high
demand. Another problem was that some people were concerned of the fact that the person taking the
masks before them would have touched all the other masks contaminating them.
experiences. I personally have accidentally broken my masks numerous amounts of times, whether its during
a class, just walking around, or during a practice. Here at school, I didn’t have any extra masks, I had to ask
about a dozen of other students if they had an extra mask until I eventually found someone who had one.
This hasn’t only happened to me but to many of our other classmates as well. There may be other
appropriate approaches such as just donating masks to the schools where they can hold extras in
classrooms, but we chose a mask dispenser on walls so that they don’t need the inconvenience of asking a
teacher if they could have a mask, instead they can just go get one themselves.
Some of the specific activities involved include firstly making a mask dispenser, similar to a Kleenex box. If
we can’t find a reusable option, then we will purchase one. We will also need to do set up multiple
fundraisers, one being a mask drive and another being a donation drive (money, so we can buy these mask
dispensers). We could also create a website or like a Venmo to raise money and we could promote this on
social media.

EVALUATION
Our quantitative goal for this Solutionary Project is to distribute around 20 masks per week. We’ll have 50
masks in our mask dispenser starting on Monday. By Sunday, we’ll check the dispense and count how many
masks are left. To accomplish this, we will place a mask dispenser at the front of school for those who either
forgot their mask or to those who simply need an extra mask just in case. As for the qualitative aspect of our
project, we want to provide the public with masks that are effective in protecting them from the COVID-19
virus. To successfully carry this out, we plan to stock the dispensers with disposable surgical masks.
DISSEMINATION
In order to communicate our idea to the community, we will make a website that summarizes our plan to place
mask dispensers around public areas that require people to wear a mask. We also plan to include statistical
data that shows the average number of cases and deaths in the U.S. and on Hawaii specifically. We also plan
to create a social media platform on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok to show our device as well as to inform the
public about different ways they can stay safe during this pandemic.

BUDGET
As of right now, we would only need money for the masks and the container in which people will take a mask
from. We plan to accept donations of unused disposable masks as well so that the expenses are less costly for us.
As for the other expenses, such as the baby wipe dispenser, we will pitch in our own money. If we need any future
