“Ganito kami noon, Paano kayo ngayon?

The film I watched “Ganito kami noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?” Is great film, because when the

Spanish & American colonized the the Philippines it shows how the Filipinos struggled to find their own

identity during that time. The film shows some social issues existing that time, like the Spaniards abuse

and didn’t treat Filipinos well, also lack of education of all people who lives in provinces and barrios.

The locals' struggles to live properly in the middle of the mess. Despite all of this, Kulas, the

film's protagonist, and the other locals would do their daily lives, going for walks, eating out, and

watching zarzuelas. The Philippines' shift from Spain to America would also result in an identity crisis

among its citizens. During the Spanish colonial period, "Filipinos" were Spaniards born in an island,

while "Indios" were the indigenous people. So when Americans arrived, everything changed, asking the

question, "Who/what is a Filipino?" Kulas had been waiting for an answer to this question for a long time.

The term evolves and is given many different meaning in the film, from Spaniards born in another

country to all those who show their love for the country throughout their acts, as seen in the scene where

Kulas addresses the children as Filipinos before leaving to join the revolutionaries.

The film gives people with a glimpse into life during this period of transition. Everyone should

see it since it is a great film. It makes people aware of the transitional challenges and highlights the cost

of freedom paid by our fellow people. The film illustrates the need of going deeper into our history; the

lessons learnt through the use of the story provide important information for future Filipino. It informs

them of their real identity and provides them with an understanding of who/what a Filipino is..
