Illumin FAQ

 Editors recommend 1500-2500 words; I generally recommend 1800-2200, but a short and
snappy essay is better than a longer, “padded” essay.
 File Names: Please use the following format to name your submission files. Last name Major
Assignment Semester Section. For example: Smith ME Illumin S19 66828
 Two visuals are required and should be integrated into the text using the 5 steps discussed in
class—depending upon the due date and our schedule, this may not be required for the initial
submission (but it will be required for portfolio)
 Section headings needed
 Double spaced
 Docx files only
 IEEE citation format required (available on Blackboard; ask in class if questions)
 8-10 sources suggested, but this is just a general rule of thumb suggestion and needs may vary
AT LEAST FOUR OF THE SOURCES SHOULD BE SCHOLARLY/ACADEMIC (This adds value for the
Illumin reader.)
 Unit skills will factor into the grading:
Summary, paraphrase, and direct quote (choosing best option) with proper citations
No “information dump”—information becomes support when it serves a purpose
Vivid and engaging prose
Open with a hook
Appropriate use of glossing (giving a quick definition with just enough detail)
Appropriate level of detail
Use of comparisons to things familiar to general public (metaphors, references to pop
culture and every day life)
Use of first person, second person, and questions can be appropriate
Clarity and concision
