Math 1201 Exam 1 February 18, 2021

1. (9 points) Determine whether the following statements are True or False. If it is true
provide an explanation as to why it is true. If it is false provide a counterexample to
the statement. Counterexamples may be specific functions, a sketch of the graph of a
function, etc.
(a) If a continuous function f has an inflection point at x = 1 then f 00 (1) = 0.
(b) Let f be differentiable on an interval (a, x) and continuous on [a, x]. Then there is
a point c in (a, x) such that f (x) = f 0 (c)(x − a) + f (a).
(c) Suppose that f (x) has an local minimum at x = c. Then f (x)2 has an local minimum
at x = c.
2. (8 points) Evaluate the following limits.
xex − 1
(a) lim x
x→2 e + 1
(b) lim x arctan(x) − π2 x
x→∞
√ √
3. (5 points) Approximate the change in y = x2 + 19 − e12 + π1 sin(π x) when x changes
from 9 to 10.
4. (12 points) Find all critical points of the following functions on the given domains.
(a) f (x) = 2x3 − 6x2 − 90x + 19 on the interval [−10, 10].

(b) f (x) = 3 sin(x) + cos(x) on the interval [0, 2π].
(c) f (x) = 6 arctan(x) − x3 on the interval (−∞, ∞).
5. (12 points) Find the absolute maximum and minimum of f (x) = sin(x) cos(x) on the
interval [0, π].
x2 +6x+9 x2 +4x+3
6. (24 points) Let f (x) = x+2
. Then f 0 (x) = (x+2)2
and f 00 (x) = 2
(x+2)3
.
(a) Does f (x) have any vertical, horizontal, or slant asymptotes? If yes, find them. If
not, explain why not.
(b) Find the x and y intercepts of f (x).
(c) Determine the critical points (if any) of f (x).
(d) Find the intervals of increase and decrease of f (x). Use these to decide if the critical
points from part (c) are giving local maximums, minimums, or neither.
(e) Find the intervals of concavity of f (x) and determine if f (x) has any inflection
points.
(f) Using the information from previous parts of this question, sketch f (x).
7. (18 points) Resolve the following optimization problems.
(a) In the figure below there is a rectangle inscribed inside a semi-circle with radius 1.
Find the maximal area of the rectangle.

(b) In the figure below there is a rectangle inscribed inside the region determined by
the x-axis, y-axis, and y = 1 − x3 . Find the maximal area of the rectangle.

y = 1 − x3

8. (12 points) A rancher is fencing off a field in the shape of the sector of a circle (but
never the entire circle). The rancher has 1 kilometer of fencing. Find the largest area
the rancher can fence off. (Hint: The length of an arc is l = θr and the area of a sector
of a circle is A = 2θ r2 where θ is in radians.)
