Aerodynamics Laboratory
Spring 2022
Catalog Description
Reinforce concepts in compressible fluid mechanics and wing aerodynamics taught in AAE 334,
laminar airfoils, flaps and slats, pressure on an airfoil, finite wings, wing tip vortices and wing tip
devices, supersonic wind tunnel, normal and oblique shock waves, expansion fans, compressible
nozzle flow, optical flow visualization, wind tunnel techniques and instrumentation. Co-requisite:
AAE 334. One credit.
Office Hours
Prof. Bane will host an office hour in the lab (ARMS 3098) on Mondays when there is no lab prep
lecture, see the schedule below for dates. You can also contact your TA at any time via email with
questions while preparing your assignments.
Class Schedule
There are six labs total – the first five labs are pre-designed labs and for the sixth and final lab
you will design your own experiment. The labs will be conducted in the following order:
1. Airfoil Characteristics
2. Pressure Tap Airfoil
3. Finite Wings
4. Supersonic Wind Tunnel
5. Compressible Nozzle Flow
All lab activities take place in the Fluid Mechanics/Aerodynamics teaching lab in Armstrong Hall,
ARMS 3098, except for Lab 3 which will take place at the Aerospace Sciences Laboratory. The
schedule for the semester is given below. Please look over the schedule carefully and pay close
attention to the important dates

• Please arrive to your lab session on time. If you are more than 10 minutes late you
will lose 5 points from your attendance score (10 points total). If you miss the entire
lab session you will lose all 10 points. If you have to miss a lab session due to illness or
quarantine, please inform the instructor and your TA as early as possible and make
sure to obtain the lab data from a team member so you can complete your post-lab
assignment.
