1. Why is India called a peninsula.


Ans: Our country is surrounded by water bodies on three bodies , so it is called a peninsula.

2. Name the neighbouring countries of India.

Ans: Afghanistan and Pakistan lie in the north – west, China, Nepal and Bhutan in the north,
Bangladesh and Myanmar in the east, and Sri Lanka in the south.

3. What makes India a land of diversity?

Ans: The differences in the cultures present in India bind the people together and make India a
land of diversity.

4. Why do you think the Indian Ocean has been named after our country?

Ans: The Indian Ocean is located to the south of India. Therefore, it is named after our country.

1. In your own words describe the location of India.

Ans :

 India is located in the continent of Asia.

 It is surrounded by water bodies on three sides.

 The Arabian Sea in the west, the Bay of Bengal in the east and the Indian Ocean
in the south.
 Our country shares its boundaries with eight countries.

2. Write a short note on the physical features of India.

Ans :

The main physical divisions of India are

i) The Northern Mountains:

Himalayas are situated to the north of our country. They form the northern borders,
starting from Ladakh and extending till Arunachal Pradesh.

ii) The Northern Plains:

The Northern Plains lie to the south of the Himalayas. The soil found in this area isvery
fertile.

iii) The Great Indian Desert:

The Great Indian Desert also known as the Thar Desert, lies in the north –western parts of
India.

iv) The Peninsular Plateau:

The Peninsular Plateau is situated in the peninsula. It consists of the Deccan Plateau,the Chota
Nagpur Plateau and the Malwa Plateau.

v) The Coastal Plains :

The Coastal plains surround the peninsular plateau on both sides.

vi) The Islands:

There are two main island groups in India.

 The Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

 The Lakshadweep Islands.
