1.0 GENERAL NOTES
This report deals with design check of steel cross arms, braces and bolts for 33kV concrete pole
overhead powerline (tangent, terminal and conductors at 50).
The different cross arm configuration includes types Horizontal Single (HS) and Horizontal
Double (HD).
Both cross arm configurations consist of 150x75 channel sections attached to a concrete pole by
use of M20 bolts.
1.1 Standards
EN 10025

EN 50341/EN 50423 (ex VDE 0210)

ANSI/ASCE 10/97

ASTM 123

1.2 Materials
Steel S275 in accordance with EN 10025

Yield strength Fy = 275MN/m2

Allowable stress amm = 137.5MN/m2

Allowable shear stress amm= 100 MN/m2

EN ISO 1461 gr. 5.6 Ultimate tensile strength Fub = 500 MN/m2

      Fyb = 300 MN/m2

All admissible stress considered a safety factor of 2.

1.2.1 External loads applied on HD cross arm with conductors at 500:

 Transversal load: W = 21.32 kN (max transv. load, each conductor).
 Vertical load: P = 3.26 kN (conductor weight and strain insulator for each phase).
 Ppin = 0.083kN (each pin insulator. weight).
 Longitudinal load: L=0kN.

2
 Dead weight of cross arm and accessories.
 Weight of a man working on cross arm Pu = 1kN, positioned in the point that gives
maximum load of cross arm.

Table 1: Showing applied loads with partial factor of safety and without partial factor of safety.

From reactions at point A

Fv,Ed =T=√(X12 + Y12 )= 58.64kN

Ft,Rd = 0kN

Ft,Rd = k2 ⋅ fub ⋅ S / γM2 = 88.2kN

Fv,Rd = αv ⋅ fub ⋅ Sg/ γM2 = 58.8kN

Fv,Ed / Fv,Rd + (Ft,Ed / Ft,Rd) / 1.4 = 0.99≤ 1.0

ok!.

Based on this calculation grade 5.6 M20 bolt is adequate for cross arm with conductors at
50ᵒ.

Recommendation
Alternatively, if you change the bolt grade from g-5.6 to g-8.8 it is safe. Because M20-g8.8 have
Shear resistance per shear plane Fv,Rd [kN]=94.1KN and the maximum load form cross arm with
conductors at 90ᵒ is 80.1KN. There for take this us another option for this case.
