TASK 3: NORMAL DISTRIBUTION

1. In a normal distribution, how are the mean and the median related? Why?
• In a normal distribution, the bell shape is symmetrical, the mean and median are equal
both located at the middle. It always has a mean of 0 and standard deviation of 1.

2. A job-applicant test consisted of three parts: verbal, quantitative, and logical reasoning. The
mean and standard deviation for each part are given below.
VERBAL QUANTITATIVE LOGICAL REASONING
Mean 84 118 14
Standard Deviation 10 18 4
a. Applicant A scores were 90 on verbal, 133 on quantitative, and 18 on logical reasoning.
Determine the applicant’s z-score for each part.
• For the verbal:
X− μ
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
σ

113 − 118
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
18

𝒛 − 𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆 = 𝟎. 𝟔

The z-score of the applicant for the verbal part is 0.6.

• For the quantitative

X− μ
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
σ

90 − 84
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
10

𝒛 − 𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆 = −𝟎. 𝟐𝟕𝟕𝟕𝟖

The z-score of the applicant for the quantitative part is -0.27778

• For the logical reasoning

X− μ
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
σ

18 − 14
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
4

𝒛 − 𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆 = 𝟏

The z-score of the applicant for the logical reasoning part is 1

b. Use the answers in (a) to determine each of the following:

i. On which part did the applicant perform relatively the highest?

Answer: The applicant did relatively well on the logical reasoning part since the
garnered a z-score of 1 higher the his/her z-scores on the verbal and quantitative part.

ii. On which part did the applicant perform relatively the lowest?
Answer: The applicant got his/her lowest score in the quantitative part since he got a z-
score of -0.27778 which is the lowest among the three parts.

iii. To determine an overall composite score, we find the mean of the z-scores. What is the
applicant’s composite score?

𝛴𝑥
𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 =
𝑁
0.6 + (−0.27778) + 1
𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 =
3
𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 = 1.32222
The applicant’s composite score is 1.32222.

3. A professor gave final examination to 110 students. Eighteen students had scores that were
more than 1 standard deviation above the mean. With this information, can you conclude that
18 of the students had scores that were more than 1 standard deviation below the mean?
Explain.

• I cannot conclude this because the data is not well stated or it is incomplete. Although is
it possible but it is not certain that 18 of the students scored more than 1 standard
deviation below the mean.

4. A psychologist finds that the intelligence quotients (IQ) of a group of patients are normally
distributed, with a mean of 102 and a standard deviation of 16. Find the percent of the patients
with IQs

a. above 114

X− μ
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
σ

114 − 102
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
16

𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 = 0.75

P-value from Z-Table:

P(x<114) = 0.77337

P(x>114) = 1 - P(x<114) = 0.22663

P(102<x<114) = P(x<114) - 0.5 = 0.27337

Meaning, the percentage of patients having an IQ above 114 is 22.66%

b. between 90 and 118.

X− μ
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
σ

90 − 102
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
16
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 = −0.75

P(x<90) = 0.22663

X− μ
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
σ

118 − 102
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
16

𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 = 1

P(x<118) = 0.84134

0.84134 - 0.22663
= 0.61471
The percentage of the patients having an IQ between 90 and 118 is at 61.47%

5. The resting heart rates of a group of healthy adult men were found to have a mean of 73.4 beats
per minute, with a standard deviation of 5.9 beats per minute. What percent of the men had a
resting heart rate of
a. greater than 80 beats per minute?

X− μ
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
σ

80 − 73.4
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
5.9

𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 = 1.11864

P-value from Z-Table:

P(x<80) = 0.86835

P(x>80) = 1 - P(x<80) = 0.13165

P(73.4<x<80) = P(x<80) - 0.5 = 0.36835

13.1% of the men will have resting heart rate of 80 beats per minute.

b. between 70 and 85 beats per minute?

X− μ
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
σ

70 − 73.4
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
5.9

𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 = −0.57627
P(x<70) = 0.28222
X− μ
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
σ

85 − 73.4
𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 =
5.9

𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 = 1.9661
P(x<85) = 0.97536

0.97536 - 0.28222
= 0.69314

69.31% of the men will have a resting heart rate between 70 and 85 beats per minute.
