INTRODUCTION
Muli, gusto kitang pasalamatan sa
paglalaan mo ng investment para sa
ating libro na START WITH P1,000 IN
STOCK MARKET. I hope that the book
guided you with so much learning.

Now, as the title of this e-book says,

this will be your guide should you want to
invest in mutual funds.

Ibang arena ang mundo ng mutual

funds pero may pagkakatulad din naman
ito halos sa stock market. Sa simpleng
guidebook na ito, pag-uusapan natin ang
tungkol sa mutual funds.

Konting history muna tayo.

6
I wrote my third book, START WITH
P1,000 IN STOCK MARKET in April to
May 2020 in the middle of the pandemic.
Nakita ko kasi kung ano ang
pangangailangan ng mga Pinoy
pagdating sa financial literacy. Halos
tumigil ang ekonomiya (o tumigil na nga
naman) dahil sa pandemya. Pero hindi
naman tumigil ang pangangailangan
natin sa pera (o pangangailangan ng
tamang paghawak natin sa pera).
Kailangan pa rin nating kumain,
magbayad ng bill sa kuryente, at iba pa.
Para sa akin, isang napakalaking eye-
opener ang dinala ng pandemya sa
buong mundo.

Habang dumarami ang

nakakapagbasa ng START WITH P1,000

7
IN STOCK MARKET, dumarami rin ang
mga tanong na natatanggap ko sa social
media at e-mail. Marami rin ang tanong
tungkol sa mutual funds. Kaya naman
nakaisip ako na gumawa ng simpleng e-
book tungkol dito para lalo pa akong
makatulong. Sakali mang interesado ka
sa mutual funds, I hope that this will help
you a lot.

8
MY CONFESSION
I have a confession to make.

Ready ka na ba? Please don’t judge

me.

Wala talaga akong experience kung

paano mag-invest sa mutual funds. Nag-
invest na kasi ako directly sa stock
market when I started. Sa mutual fund,
you are giving your investment to a
mutual fund company or a mutual fund
manager tapos sila na ang bahala kung
paano i-ma-manage ang pera mo.

Hindi ko ito ginawa dahil mas prefer

ko ang mag-manage ng sarili kong
portfolio. Dahil dito, mas napilitan akong
mag-aral ng stock market dahil kung

9
hindi ko ito seseryosohin, walang
magyayari sa investments ko. You may
have a different story, and this is just my
preference. May posibilidad din na baka
mas swak para sa iyo ang mutual funds
than the stock market. Pwede rin naman
na you invest both to mutual funds and
stock market. It’s you call as an investor.

Now, to tell you more about the

mutual fund, let me use this analogy.

10
SA MUTUAL FUND,
PASAHERO KA
May mga pros and cons ang bawat
investment na meron dito sa mundo. If
you’ve finished reading our book, START
WITH P1,000 IN STOCK MARKET, you
already learned that the stock market is
very volatile. Isa ito sa mga cons ng stock
market. Pero meron din naman itong mga
pros like good returns. Sabi nga nila,
“The higher the risk, the higher the
return.” Dagdagan ko lang: “Provided that
you know how to manage risk.”

Now, let’s go to mutual fund. Isa sa

good analogy na narinig ko noon: “Sa
mutual fund, pasahero ka.”

What does this mean?

11
Once na mag-decide ka na
maglalagay ka ng pera sa mutual fund,
para kang isang pasahero either sa
tricycle, jeep, bus, airplane at iba pa.
Wala kang direct control sa steering
wheel o manibela.

Nakaupo ka lang.

Pasipol-sipol.

Listening to music.

O kaya naman ay umiinom ng milk

tea.

Fast forward. Nakarating ka na sa

destination mo ng hindi ka man lang
nagmaneho. Sa mutual fund kasi,
binibigay mo ang control sa isang mutual
fund company. Ang pera mo ay managed
12
by an experienced mutual fund manager.
Seasoned at subok na ang talion at
galing ng mga mutual fund managers na
ito. Alam nila kung saan ilalagay ang pera
ng kanilang mga clients nila para
mapalago ito. Kesa ikaw ang mag-
manage, pinapa-manage mo ito sa iba.
That’s mutual fund.

Just like being a passenger, binibigay

mo ang control ng byahe sa driver. In
mutual fund, that is your company or
manager. Sila ang may control. So saan
naman nila nilalagay ang investment mo?

Sa iba’t-ibang investment vehicles at

ang stock market ay isa lang dito. So
‘yung pera mo, may portion na nasa
stock market din. May portion din naman

13
na nasa government bonds, corporate
funds, at iba pa.

Now going back sa analogy natin.

Kung hindi ka marunong

magmaneho ng sasakyan o wala kang
sariling sasakyan, better go commute,
hire a driver o kaya naman makisabay ka.
At kung may boyfriend ka na may kotse,
pahatid ka. Libre mo na lang siya ng
hamburger in return of his service.

It is the same with mutual funds.

Kung wala kang time para mag-aral ng
stock market, better go to a mutual fund
company.

14
Kung feeling mo rin na maloloka-loka
ka sa pag-aaral ng market, mas mainam
na move ang mutual fund for you.

Kung natatakot ka sa roller coaster

ride ng stock market, better seek the
assistance of a mutual fund manager. In
return of availing their service, you will be
charged for a fee.

I hope I didn’t complicate these

things. Sa mutual funds, pasahero ka. Sa
stock market naman, driver ka.

You can also try both stock market

and mutual funds. May portion of your
investment para bumili ka ng direct
shares. Tapos let say, may portion ka din
naman na para sa funds.

15
SAAN AKO PUPUNTA?
Kung sakali man na gusto mong
mag-invest sa mutual fund, pwede mo rin
itong gawin sa COL Financial.
TRADING_MF3/MF_MAIN_NL.asp)

Isa rin sa mga factors kung bakit

hindi ako nagkaroon ng experience sa
mutual funds ay dahil noong nagsimula
ako, wala pa nito sa COL. Hindi ko sure
kung kailan sila nagsimula nito. Basta
nagising na lang ako one day, meron ng
mutual fund tab ang COL.

Kung mayroon ka ng account sa

COL, makikita mo ang Mutual Fund sa
mismong dashboard mo. See the orange
circle below:

16
After this, makikita mo naman ito:

Para makapag-place ka ng order,

kailangan mong pumunta sa “Order
Entry”. Once you click it, you will be
asked to answer the Client Suitability
Assessment Questionnaire.

Proceed ka lang.

If you will not answer this

questionnaire, you cannot buy any of the
funds offered by COL. Maganda rin na
masagutan mo ito para malaman mo ang
swak na fund para sa iyo. Marami pa
17
kasing type ng mutual funds at maganda
na laser-focused ka sa fund na aligned sa
financial goals mo.

Answer this based on your

preference, so you’ll have a good
assessment. After this, you will see your
risk profile and rating.

A list of recommended funds will also

be shown to you. Look on the list and
familiarize yourself with this. You can

18
also access this on the Investor Profile
tab.

19
THE DIFFERENT FUND TYPES
Gaya ng sinulat ko kanina, mayroon
pang iba’t ibang klase ng fund depende
sa risk rating nito. May mga funds na
mababa, medium at mataas ang involved
risks.

Pagdating naman sa risk, pwede

nating gawing analogy ang pagtawid mo
sa isang kalsada.

Kung mababa ang risk appetite mo,

hindi ka tatawid sa isang kalye na
sobrang dami ng dumadaan na mabibilis
na sasakyan. O kung marami mang
mabibilis na sasakyan, hihintayin mo
muna ang red traffic light para makatawid
ka. Gagamitin mo pa ang pedestrian
lane. Kadalasan, kahit red traffic light na,

20
tumitingin pa rin tayo sa kaliwa at kanan
bago tumawid. Bakit? Para hindi risky.

At kung mataas naman ang risk

appetite mo, willing ka na tumawid kahit
na rumaragasa ang mga sasakyan.
Calculated mo ang bawat galaw mo.
Confident ka na hindi ka mapapahamak.
Seize the day ka. Syempre hindi ako
encourager ng pagtawid sa kalsada ng
basta-basta. This is just an analogy.
Never take this literally.

Gusto ko ring ipaalala sa iyo ito:

“Past performance is not a guarantee of
future performance.” Kahit na mga
experts na ang may hawak ng
investments mo, mahalaga na huwag
nating kalimutan na may mga

21
uncertainties pa rin sa mundo. Isang
example na lang nito ay ang COVID-19
Pandemic. Kahit gaano katatag ang
ekonomiya ng isang bansa, noong
nagsimula na ang pandemic, nakaranas
pa rin ng downfall. But the beauty of
mutual funds, pwede kang pumili ng type
of funds na swak lang sa risk appetite at
time horizon mo.

Now, let us discuss the different fund

types. I also indicate here their risk rating.
Rate of 1 = lowest, and 8 = highest, as
well as the recommended investment
horizon.

• Money Market Fund (Risk rating: 1 to

2) (Recommended Investment

22
Horizon: Short-term, less than 1
year)
• Bond Fund (3 to 4) (Short to medium-
term, 1 to 3 years)
• Balanced Fund (5 to 6) (Medium to
long-term, 3 to 5 years)
• Equity Index Fund (7 to 8) (Long-
term, more than 5 years)
• Equity Fund (7 to 8) (Long-term,
more than 5 years)

23
MONEY MARKET FUND
Ang Money Market Fund ang may
pinakamababang risk rating sa lahat. Ito
ay inilalagay ng mga mutual fund
companies sa special savings accounts,
time deposits at iba pang government
securities o corporate bonds. Ito ay
kumikita sa pamamagitan ng interest at
coupon payments1. Swak ang type na
fund na ito sa mga gustong naka-park
lang ang pera nila sa mga liquid
instrument at short-term horizon. Ito ay
mas mataas ang earnings compared sa
savings sa mga bangko. Low-risk, low-
return fund din ito with stable returns. Ang
Minimum withholding period ay 7 araw.

instrument matures. (www.myaccountingcourse.com)

these funds, you can also access them in

tab.

27
BOND FUND
Mas mataas na ang risk rating ng
Bond Fund compared sa Money Market
Fund. Naka-focus na ang fund na ito sa
investment sa mga government at
corporate funds. Ang bond ay isang debt
instrument. Ikaw mismo ang
nagpapautang sa gobyerno o
korporasyon. Dahil nagpautang ka,
bibigyan ka ng mga institusyon na ito ng
interest bilang return. May kababaan pa
rin ang interest nito kumpara sa
balanced, equity index, at equity funds.
Ang bond fund ay swak sa mga tao na
gusto ng steady na fixed income. Ideal
time frame is 1 to 3 years.

BALANCED FUND
Ang Balanced Fund ay para sa mga
gustong mag-invest sa parehong stocks
at fixed income investments. Dahil nga
balanced ito, ito ay combination ng
parehong low risk at high-risk rating
investments. Kumbaga, this is either
conservative or aggressive. Nasa gitna
lang o moderate ang risk. Kumikita
naman ang fund na ito sa pamamagitan
ng price appreciation, dividends at
coupon payments. Okay ito kung 3 to 5
years.

EQUITY FUND
In my observation, equity fund has
the highest risk rating among the all the
mutual funds. The fund is managed and
invested in a mix of stocks chosen by a
fund manager.

Kung mataas ang risk appetite mo at

mas mahaba ang time horizon for
investing (let say more than 5 years),
then equity fund is for you. Ang fund na
ito ay “actively managed” para
makapagbigay ng mas mataas ng
returns. Hindi necessary na nasa top 30
blue chip stocks lang ang pera. Inilalagay
din ito ng fund manager sa ibang
companies na may promising returns.
Mayroong fund na naka-focus sa
consumer sector. Mayroon naman na
50
nakalagay ang big portion sa
construction, retail, power & utilities at
kung anu-ano pa. Katulad ng ways of
earning sa stock market, ang equity fund
ay kumikita sa pamamagitan ng price
appreciation at dividends.

FUNDS
Let’s assume na nasagutan mo na
ang assessment questionnaire ng COL.
Ngayon, kapag nagpunta ka sa Order
Entry tab, makikita mo ang isa pang type
ng questionnaire. This time, it is about the
Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act.

Pagkatapos mong masagutan ito,

you will be shown terms and conditions.
Read and understand everything. Then
click “I Agree”.

After this, you will see the Order

Entry dashboard. Madali lang itong
gamitin. Ang kailangan mo lang ilagay ay
62
ang Fund Code at Amount. You will see
the complete list of Fund Codes when
you accessed the “Fund Code”. (See the
orange circle below)

For example, gusto mong bumili ng

Philam Bond Fund, you just need to type
in XPABF and put your initial investment.
Pwede ring sobra sa initial investment
ang ilagay mo.

Tuwing kailan ka naman pwedeng

magdagdag ng investment? It’s up to
you. Pwedeng weekly, monthly,
quarterly, semi-annual. Keep in mind to

63
follow the minimum additional amount.
Again, pwede ring mas mataas sa
additional amount ang ilagay mo. These
are just the “minimums”.

Just like any other investments, mas

maganda na madadagdagan mo pa rin
ang initial investment mo para sa higher
possibility of good returns in the future.

Please take note as well that the cut-

off for investing and redeeming is at
10:30 AM. Otherwise, your order will be
processed the next trading day.

64
As shown in the screenshot above,
let say I want to invest P10,000 to Philam
Bond Fund or XPABF, this is how it looks
like. Then click the “Preview Order”.

In the next window, you just need to

confirm your order. Enter your password
and then place it.

To redeem your mutual funds, just

choose the “Redeem”. The method is
almost the same. But on this module, you
need to enter the number of shares that
you want to redeem.

65
If you want to have a feel of
automation, you can start to schedule
your investment. Click on the “Schedule
EIP”.

There are still other modules that you

can access on the tabs. If you want to
learn more about mutual funds, go to
FAQs.
