What I Have Learned – Activity 4: Positive or Negative

POSITIVE 1) If the body’s internal temperature rises too high, specialized neurons in the
hypothalamus detect the change. These neurons send signals to other nerve centers, which
then send signal to the skin’s blood vessels. As these blood vessels dilate, more blood flows
near the body’s surface, and excess heat radiates from the body.

NEGATIVE 2) When the blood temperature drops too low, specialized neurons in the
hypothalamus of the brain detect the change and send signals to the cutaneous arteries (those
that supply the skin) to constrict them. Warm blood is then retained deeper within the body,
resulting in less heat loss from the surface.

POSITIVE 3) The production of an enzyme that forms the blood clot matrix is part of the
complex biochemical pathway of blood clotting. This has a self-catalytic, or self-accelerating
effect, so once the clotting process begins, it accelerates until the bleeding stops, ideally.\
POSITIVE 4) During childbirth, stretching the uterus causes the hormone oxytocin to be
secreted, which stimulates uterine contractions and speed up labor.

NEGATIVE 5) When blood pressure is high, the walls of the arteries stretch. Baroreceptors in
these walls stretch as well, and as a result, a signal is sent to the brain, slowing the body’s heart
rate. This causes less pressure by slowing the flow of blood through the arteries. As blood
pressure falls, the baroreceptors become flaccid, and a signal is sent to increase the heart rate.
