LAB NO 6
AC Power Analysis & measurement in RL series circuit

Objective:

• Study the phasor relationship between Voltage and Current in a single phase RL Circuit.
• Study the concept of real power (P), reactive power (Q), apparent power(S) and power
factor (cosΦ).
• Use the power triangle to determine relationships between real, reactive and apparent
power

Equipment:

• Function generator
• Oscilloscope
• Digital multimeter (DMM)

Circuit Diagrame :

Procedure:
• First of all we need to find frequency theoretically
• After finding frequency we need to find XL
• Then finding all theoretical values now we have to implement on breadboard
• First of all, built a circuit on breadboard as given on manual
• After this we need to find current I, for this we have to break the circuit and then we have
to measure by help of multimeter
• Then we need to find voltage across inductor and as well as resistor
• After this we have to find phase angle, for this we will use oscilloscope
• By oscilloscope we will get (delta t) and for confirmation we will use this formula( delta
t/f *360)
• By using this we can check our phase angle • At last note down the values.

Theoretical work:
Question/Ans
Q: How did your measured power factor (Pf) in step 6 compare with the value determined
from the power triangle in step 5. Is it lagging or leading? Explain Why.
Ans :
In the RL series circuit, the flow of current is lagging behind the voltage through an
angle ‘ϕ’ due to the inductor effect. So here, the power factor (PF) can be given like the cosine of
lagging angle ‘ϕ’

The power factor = Cos ϕ = Resistance/Impedance = R/Z

Applications: The basic components like Resistors, Capacitors, and Inductors are combined
to form different circuits such as RC, RL & RLC circuits. The applications of RL circuit, RC & RLC
include the following.
• RF Amplifiers
• Communication Systems
• Filtering Circuits
• Processing of Signal
• Oscillator Circuits
• Magnification of Current or Voltage
• Variable Tunes Circuits
• Radio Wave Transmitters
• Resonant LC Circuit/RLC Circuit
• These circuits are used as DC power supplies within RF amplifiers because the inductor
(L) is used to supply DC bias current & block the RF to reach the power supply.

Conclusion:
From this lab we concluded that how we can calculated the Irms and also voltage across resistor and

Inductor.I also concluded that how we can find power factor.
