Developing Independent Musicians Through Collaborative

Rehearsal Techniques

Rehearsal Framework & Goals


Student musicians spend the vast majority of their musical experience in “rehearsal” compared to
“performance” situations. Therefore, the rehearsal environment must include a framework for
addressing the dual, and sometimes divergent pathways of:
• Developing student performance skills
• Developing student musical understanding
Our goal should not simply be to produce polished performances, but rather to develop:
• Independent, musically literate students giving quality, skilled performances!

Questions to drive a paradigm shift in rehearsal:


• Do I create an environment where students are empowered to make decisions and apply
knowledge?
• Do I create an environment that promotes
• Efficiency (of rehearsal)?
• Opportunity (for growth)?
• Application (of concepts)?
• Transfer (of developed skillsets or previous musical knowledge)?
• Do my words reinforce standards, goals, and student growth?
• Does my feedback provide the opportunity for students to be active and engaged
participants in their own musical development, ensemble preparation, assessment and
decision making?

The Rehearsal Process entails navigating the space between the first attempt and the desired
outcome. Moving students from compliant receivers of information to collaborative
contributors in the ensemble means providing guided, structured opportunities for students to
participate in:
• Information • Engagement
Leading to a higher level of:
• Feedback • Discussion
• Assessment • Discovery
• Understanding
Collaborative Rehearsal Strategies
• Intentional language and questioning as a tool for engagement
• Avoiding the “Don’t” statement
• Feedback that promotes what you want to achieve vs. what you are trying to avoid
• Targeted Listening
• Tell me about…
• Player 1/Player 2
• Find 1 thing…
• Compare, Compliment, and Critique
• Record this rep
• Peer-to-peer assessment
• Student-created “unit studies” or program notes
• Online/Virtual Assessment & Critique
• Google Classroom, Canvas, etc
