Physics 30 Final Exam Review

The final exam for Physics 30 covers all 4 units of the course. You are expected to
know and apply concepts learned in both Physics 20 and 30. The following is a list
of concepts you can use to help guide your preparation for the final exam:

Unit A

1) Vector diagrams
2) Freebody diagrams for force
3) Calculating momentum
4) Use uniform motion (balanced forces) and uniformly accelerated motion
(unbalanced forces) equations to solve for a, d or t
5) Determine the impulse using the area of a graph
6) Calculate the momentum or velocity before and after for a bump and stick
collision
7) Properties of elastic vs inelastic collisions and kinetic energy calculations to
determine if the collision is elastic or inelastic
8) Ballistic pendulum calculations (determine speed, mass, energy)

Unit B –

1) Charging by friction, induction and conduction

2) Calculating Fe for point charges and moving charges
3) Using hand rules to determine direction of charge, field or force
4) Calculating stopping voltage
5) Using graphs to determine the slope and/or relationship between variables
6) Bubble chambers/Cloud Chambers – pathways of charged particles
7) Predicting direction and strength of fields.
8) Types of fields, their sources and effects
9) Millikan’s Oil drop – the experiment, calculations with balanced and
unbalanced forces
10) Understand the relationships between variables in equations and explain
what they mean. Ex) Fe = kq1q2/r2 what is the relationship between Fe and
r?
Unit C

1) EMR spectrum – know wavelengths, frequencies, energy of each type of EMR

2) Calculate wavelength, frequency, period
3) Michelson’s experiment – use the given data to determine speed or distance
4) Refraction – what properties change as light refracts, what stays the same
5) Calculate the critical angle or index of refraction
6) Diffraction – what it is & what causes it happen
7) Using λ = d sin theta/n to find an unknown
8) Properties of lenses and mirrors
9) Calculating di, do, f, hi, ho or m
10) Photoelectric effect – calculate work function, Ek or Energy of the photon
11) Compton effect – calculate change in wavelength, speed or pathway of
electron
12) Calculating momentum of a photon
13)Using graphical analysis to determine W function, threshold frequency or
slope (Planck’s Constant)

Unit D

1) Models of the atom & relevant experiments that proved or disproved each
2) Nuclear decay reactions – be able to write and analyze
3) Line absorption spectra vs line emission spectra
4) Alpha decay, Beta + , Beta – and gamma decay. Write and analyze equations
for these forms of decay.
5) Quarks vs antiquarks

I suggest working problems on Workbook to review these concepts. Read the intro
material for each section and make notes. You must be familiar with these
concepts. Work problems from the Problems for each chapter. If you get stuck
please email me for help. Don’t worry about the Extensions or Review Assignment
portions right now.
