PRETEST: A Few Review Questions
8. What does the term “Molar Mass” mean? Give an explanation in words.
It refers to the mass in grams of 1 mole of a specific pure substance and is measured in
g/mol.
9. What is the molar mass of sucrose (C12H22O11(s))? Be sure to include the measurement
units.
(12.01)12 + (1.01)22 + (16.00)11 = 342.34 g/mol
10. What mass would be present if you had 4.38 moles of MgCO3 (s)?
M = 24.31 + 12.01 + (16.00)3 = 84.32 g/mol
4.38 mol X 84.32 g = 369.3216 g or 369 g
1 mol
11. If there is a mass of 38.95 g of carbon tetrachloride in a sample, how many moles would
this represent?
Carbon tetrachloride is CCl4 so its molar mass is: 12.01g + (35.45 g)4 = 153.81 g/mol
38.95 g X 1 mol = 0.2532345101 mol or 0.2532 mol
153.81 g
12. What is the molar volume of gas at STP conditions?
22.4 L/mol
13. A sample of 2.45 mol of methane gas is at 33.80 C and a pressure of 96.3 kPa. What
volume will the methane gas occupy?
PV = nRT where R = 8.314 kPa • L
mol • K
96.3 kPa X V = 2.45 mol X 8.314 kPa • L X (273.15 + 33.8) K
mol • K
V = 2.45 mol X 8.314 kPa • L (273.15 + 33.8) K
96.3 kPa • mol • K
V = 64.92582175 L or 64.9 L
Use this reaction equation to answer the next questions.
8. If 4.33 moles of sodium phosphate is dissolved in water and then made to a volume of
375 mL, what will the concentration of this solution be?
When solid calcium nitrate dissolves in water it dissociates to separate and produce soluble
calcium 2+ cations and nitrate 1- anions in a 1:2 proportion.
