−1  x  4 does the instantaneous rate of change of f equal the average rate of change of f?

f ( x ) − f ( 2) f ( x ) − f ( 3)
(c) For each of lim and lim , find the value or give a reason why it does not exist.

2. The number of passengers who have boarded a ship is modeled by the differential function P, where t is the number
of hours since boarding began. Selected values of P ( t ) are given in the table below.

t (hours)
0 1 3 6 8
P ( t ) (passengers) 0 35 204 600 728

(a) According to the model, what is the average rate at which passengers board the ship, in passengers per hour,
over the time interval 1  t  8 hours?
(b) Write P ' ( 45 ) as the limit of a difference quotient. Use the data in the table to approximate P ' ( 45 ) . Show the
computations that lead to your answer.
(c) Must there be a time t, for 3  t  6 , at which P ( t ) = 500 ? Justify your answer.
(d) The total number of gallons of water used by the passengers on the ship is modeled by the function G defined
by G ( t ) = 120t t for 0  t  8 , where t is the number of hours since boarding began. Find G ' ( 4 ) and explain
its meaning in the context of the problem.

(a) Use the average rate of change formula. Show the set-up, plug in the numbers, and do not simplify.

(b) Use the average rate of change formula to approximate the derivative at a value. Be sure to use an estimation
symbol. Show the set-up, plug in the numbers, and do not simplify.

(c) Use the Intermediate Value Theorem. You cannot just say “yes, by IVT”. You must state that “since P ( t ) is
differential, that means it is also continuous. P ( 3) = 204  500 and P ( 6 ) = 600  500 , then P ( t ) = 500 in
3  t  6 by IVT”.

3
(d) Simplify G ( t ) to G ( t ) = 120t 2 . Find G ' ( t ) using the Power Rule, do not simplify. Evaluate at t = 4 , do not
simplify. If G ( t ) is the number of passengers who have boarded the plane, then G ' ( t ) must be the RATE at
which people are boarding the plane.

(b) Use your g ' ( x ) from part (a) to find g " ( x ) . Use the product rule, substitute, and a bit of algebra.

(c) Use the Intermediate Value Theorem.

(d) Note: there was a typo on the original question. I have made the correction to “instantaneous rate of change of
h”.

Graph h ' ( x ) as Y1 . Use the average rate of change formula for f ( x ) . Graph this value as a horizontal line as
Y2 . Determine the x-value of the point of intersection.
