KNOWING GOD

INTRODUCTION:
One of the most exciting and humbling truths of the Christian Life is that God desires to have
relationship with us. We are made to know Him. Even after we trust Him as our Saviour, He wants us
to grow in our knowledge of Him and Experience with Him.

John 17:3
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom
thou hast sent.

In this lesson, we learn about who God is, and how we deepen our relationship with Him.

LESSONTWO
God Has Revealed Himself to Us
God does not expect just figure out for ourselves who He is. He has specifically
____________________ Himself to us.

Notice just a few of the ways God has made Himself known to mankind:

He reveals Himself through ______________________________.

We simply to look around us to see evidence of an all – powerful God.
 Psalm 19:1

Even as an intricately-crafted clock points to a skilled maker, so a perfectly - synchronized solar

system and universe points to a Creator.

The very first verse the Bible tells us that God made the world.
 Genesis 1:1

Incredibly, God made the entire world out of nothing - simply by speaking it into existence.
 Genesis 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24

In the summary of God’s creation, we read that He made it all “very good.”
 Genesis 1:31

(It wasn’t until sin entered the world, as we find in Genesis 3, that pain, suffering and death came as
well. We’ll look at this more closely in lesson 4)

Although many people have tried to discredit the Creation account of Genesis 1-2, there is no science
that probe or disapprove the ___________________ of the universe. Scientists who believe the
Bible (and there are many) interpret the data from a biblical worldview that includes the belief in a
creator and a worldwide flood. To them the evidence and conclusions clearly match. Similarly,
scientists who believe in evolutionary process likewise approach data with their worldview, and to
them, the data suggest another conclusion. The truth is since no one was there to witness the
beginning of the universe, both conclusions are accepted by faith.

Indeed, the Bible tells us that believing God created the world we see out of nothing is a matter of
_____________.
Hebrews 11:3
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which
are seen were not made of things which do appear.

Believing in the creations is faith in a ____________________, while believing in evolution is

faith in _______________.

Knowing God is our creator leads to an important conclusion: We are created for Him, not for
ourselves.
Revelation 4:11
Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all
things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

We do not exist to __________________ ourselves, but to please God.

He has revealed Himself throughout ______________________.

There were two times in the world history when the entire world knew the revealed truth of
who God is.

In the Garden of _____________

 Genesis 2:15-17

In _____________ day
 Genesis 7:1

Before the worldwide flood that God sent as judgement on the Earth, God made a way for everyone
alive to escape His judgement. Noah preached, warning everyone, that God’s judgement would come
and that they find refuge in the ark. Sadly, only Noah and his Family believed God and were saved by
their faith.

2 Peter 2:5
And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness,
bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

He has revealed Himself through the Human_____________________________.

Interestingly, the Bible never sets out to prove the existence of God. It Simply assumes His existence.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth.

This Biblical assumption is beacause God hardwired the knowledge of Himself into our Hearts when
He made us.
 Romans 2:14-15

It has been wisely observed that no one is born an atheist. All around the world, people know there is
some God, and they have a sense of right and wrong. That sense may be molded (amd in some cases
twisted or silenced) by their environment, but it is there, nonetheless.

Scripturre tells us it is ______________ who has placed within us the gift of conscience which
testifies of God, of sin, and f our need of Him.
John 1:9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

People can - and do - reject the knowledge of God. But it is not because there is no evidence from both
within and without - to support the truth of God’s existence.

Psalm 14:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done
abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

He has revealed Himself through the _______________________.

While nature gives us general revelation of God (i.e that there is a God) , the Bible gives us specific
revelation of God (i.e exactly who He is and what He is like). We saw this in Lesson 1 and we will look
at many specific verses throughout this lesson.

He has revealed Himself through His ______________________.

Jesus Christ came as God in the flesh to reveal to us who God is.
 1 Timothy 3:16

And so, In creation, throughout history, embedded into our conscience and through His Word and
His Son, God has revealed Himself to us. He want us to know Him!

God Exists as a Trinity

The Bible clearly tells us there is _________ true God

 Mark 12:29

Notice these verses as well that emphatically state there is one God.

Isaiah 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though
thou hast not known me:

Ephesians 4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

James 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and
tremble.

But the Bible also tells us that this God is exists as a ____________________________
- litterally a tri-unity, or three in one. Scripture refers to this as the “Godhead.”
 Acts 17:29
 Romans 1:20

We see throughout Scripture that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all God - although there
is but one God.

1 John 5:7
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these
three are one.

Note: “the Word” in this verse refers to Jesus Christ. Compare to John 1:1, 14, We’ll study this futher
in our next lesson.

There is one God who exists simultaneously in three _________________ .

Each is coequal, copowerful, and coeternal,
The ___________________ is God.
 Romans 1:7

The __________________ is God

 Hebrews 1:8

(Our next lesson is dedicated to learning more about God the Son - Jesus.)

The ___________________ is God.

 Acts 5:3-4

(We’ll learn more about the Holy Spirit and how He works in our lives in Lesson 7.)

The trinity is impossible to expalain, but it is vital to believe. We see it all throughout the Bible. Notice
these verses that refer to all the three parts of the Trinity at the ____________ time.

Matthew 3:16-17

16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens
were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Matthew 28:19

9 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Ghost:

2 Corinthians 13:14

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be
with you all. Amen.

We are made in the _________________ of God.

One of the earliest revelations of t he Trinity was given in the very first chapter of the Bible. Notice the
use of God Speaking in the plural “us” in this verse.
 Genesis 1:26

And there, even as the God began to reveal His Trinity, He also revealed that He made us in His
image. He made us to ___________________ Himself.

We don’t resemble God in Physical characteristics, for God is a spirit and does not require a body.

John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Rather, we resemble in Him in the sense that we have a body, soul , and spirit; we have physical and
immaterial component to our being. We wer created in His likeness mentally, socially, morally, and
spiritually.

Mentally, we were created with intelligence and rationale - an abililty to reason and choose.
Socially, we were created with a need of interaction and fellowship.

Morally, we were created with responsibility to live according to right and wrong.

Spiritually, we were created with a spirit that will live forever even our after our bodies dies and
with the capacity to have a relationship with God.

All these areas of our _____________________________ to God’s image are seen in Genesis 2
and 3.

We see Adam and Eve’s social need in their relationship with each other. (Genesis 2:18)

We see their moral responsibility in that God gave them a specific command and the free will to
choose to obey or disobey (Genesis 2:16-17) and in the fact that they indeed made a choice (Genesis
3:6)

We see their spiritual capacity in their personal relationship with God, which was later severed
through sin. (Genesis 3:8)

God is so much __________________________ than our minds can comprehend. And yet, He
made us in His image and for a relationship with Him.

The Bible Tells Us about God’s Characteristics

In addition to the truth that God is a Trinity - three in one - the Bible tells us much more about God
and His Characteristics.

We often refer to these as God’s _________________________________

Some of God’s attributes are _______________________ to God alone.

Theologians call these characteristics “non-communicable.” In other words, we will never become like
God in these ways, because these belong to God alone.

Notice a few of amazing, awesome attributes of our God:

_____________ (completely sinless and absoloutely unique)

Isaiah 6:3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the
whole earth is full of his glory.

___________________ (all-present, or present everywhere at the same time)

Proverbs 15:3
The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

Jeremiah 23:24
Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I
fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.

_______________________ (all-powerful)
Psalm 33:9
For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

Jeremiah 32:17
Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and
stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:

________________________ (all-knowing)
Hebrews 4:13
Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and
opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

______________________ (cannot and will not change)

Malachi 3:6
For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

Hebrews 13:8
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.—

Isaiah 46:10
Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet
done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

1 Timothy 6:15
Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and
Lord of lords;

_____________________ (eternal with no beginning and no end and without measure or limit)

Psalm 90:2

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world,
even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

Some of God’s attributes He wants to develop _____________ us.

The previous characteristics belong to God alone. And yet, there are some God Characteristics that He
wants to develop in us. (We call these communicable attributes. They are the moral characteristics of
God.)
Even as God created us in His image in certain capacities, He desires to make us in His image by
developing His characteristics in our _______________.

A partial list of some of these attributes is called the “___________ of the Spirit” in the book of
Galatians. Well Study this list and how the Holy Spirit develops these characteristics in us more
thoroughly in Lesson 7.

 Galatians 5:22-23

The Bible promises us that _________________ God allows in our lives He can use for the
purpose of conforming – or molding – us to the image of Jesus Christ.

 Romans 8:28-29
The exciting thing about knowing God is that the ________________ we learn about who He is,
the more we can become like Him in his moral attributes.

APPLICATION

These three truths summarize how what we have studied in this lesson can help us grow in our
relationship with God:

God has revealed Himself to us because He __________ a relationship with us.

After you trust Christ as your Saviour, He wants you to continue growing in your relationship with
Him. He wants you to get to know Him better day by day even as you would in a close friendship with
another person.

Growth in your Christian Life___________ through growth in your relationship with

God. As you read the Bible, read it to understand who God is. Even as you can’t have a close human
relationship with someone you don’t really know, you won’t grow in a relationship with God unless
you grow in knowing God personally.

Growth in your Christian life is ________________ by becoming more like Christ.

God does not want us to know Him purely for head knowledge. He wants us like Him in our daily
lives. You will know that you are growing as a Christians as you become more like Heavenly Father in
day-to-day situations.
