Conjunctions

• A conjunction joins words or groups of words. and, but, and or are conjunctions.
• A sentence that contains two sentences joined by and, but, or or is called a compound sentence.
• In a compound sentence, a comma is placed before the conjunction

Directions: Read the sentences below. Underline the conjunction, then put a comma in the
correct place.

1. Inadequate rainfall or prolonged drought is the leading cause of wildfires but these fires can also be
caused by campfires or a stray match.

2. Juanita heard the severe weather report and decided to take a day off of work.

3. We can eat pasta and meatballs from last night or we can order couple of pizzas.

4. Mathew’s dad has been struggling to find a job but he still is somehow managing all his expenses
quite well.

5. Beverly practices yoga and Pilates to stay in shape.

6. Alyssa must score Df ew goals before the first half of the game or this could be the last game for
hert eam in this tournament.

7. Last week, Mia got some lab work done and is now eagerly waiting for the phone call from the
doctor.

8. The books on the couch and the toys scattered on the floor need to be put away.

9. Mia and Abby spent almost a month on their trip to Cuba.

10. Everybody but Jonathan went WRscience camp.

11. Everyone was enjoying the great food at the party but Rangel chose to fill his plate up with healthier
food items.

12. Do we still have a conference at 9.00 a.m. tomorrow or is there a change in schedule?
