NOISE ASSESSMENT, NOVEMBER 2021

1. INTRODUCTION
With the improvement of living standards, urbanization, and industrialization, noise pollution has
become an environmental factor that is most frequently encountered by anyone, anytime, and
anywhere in everyday life. Unlike other environmental problems, noise pollution tends to
increase continuously, and the sufferings of the residents exposed to noise also increase
gradually. In particular, in a rapidly developing society, poor buildings’ quality, poor urban
planning, and traffic noises generate more exposed to noise pollution.
Neighbourhood noise may stem from various potential sources of noise (such as ventilation
systems; church bells; animals; neighbours; commercial, recreational and occupational activities;
or shooting/military). As the sources might be located in close proximity to where people live,
they could cause considerable annoyance even at low levels.
The main background factors of noise issues include overcrowding, developing urbanization,
sprawling development, building of apartments and houses with inadequate sound insulation,
increased use of electric equipment at home, increased number of recreation facilities, and lack
of communication among neighbours. In addition, the calmness of a residential area depends on
the noises outside the house
The noise assessment was conducted in the surrounding neighbourhood to analyse and identify
the noise sources and the amount of noise produced in a certain area at a given period of time.
Certain points from the site is chosen and then sound assessment is done along with analysis of
certain factors altering noise levels like building typology, building material, height of building,
vegetation, road typology, road layout and road width. Noise level refers to the level of sound.
A noise survey involves taking noise measurements throughout an entire area or a particular
section to identify noisy areas.
It is an analysis over the sound measurement over a neighbourhood to deeply study the noise
pattern over an area in accordance with the obstacles and distances from the noise source. This is
usually done with a sound level meter (SLM). The purpose of the survey is to gather a better
understanding about how and to what extent noise issues in the neighbourhood impact the well-
being and health of the residents and also the source and intensity of the sound produced.

2. SITE PROFILE
The noise assessment survey was conducted in the neighbourhood area of The Gardens located
in Jebel Ali, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The radius considered for the area of survey is
approximately 250,963 m2. The perimeter of the site is approximately 4.2 km. It is in the
outskirts of the mainland core city area. The approximate population the study area is 10,000.
There are around 129 low-rise apartment buildings and 2 mixed use units. The Gardens is a
relatively small neighborhood nestled between Jebel Ali Village, Sheikh Zayed Road and

7. NOISE SURVEY
7.1 THEORY
Since the neighborhood is in the city of Dubai, UAE, the noise benchmarks according
to the Dubai Municipality is as follows- For most of Dubai, permitted noise level
during the day is 40-50dbA (7am to 8pm), while at night, a level of 30-40 dbA is
acceptable (8pm to 7am).
As an example, noise around 50 decibels is equivalent to that of a car driving past or
the hum of a refrigerator. The sound of a quiet classroom or library would be around
40 decibels. However, in Downtown Dubai, noise levels are slightly higher during the
day and at night — at 45-55 dbA and 35-45 dbA respectively.
The neighborhood is somewhat in the outskirts of the mainland city (Downtown
Dubai), so the permitted level during the day is 40-50 dbA in the mornings and 30-40
dbA in the nights.

NOISE ASSESSMENT, NOVEMBER 2021

7.2 APPLICATION
The noise meter by Jinasys was used to conduct the survey. The application was
used on an Android Phone. It showed average, Leq, min, max and peak dB. The
application was easy to use and displayed the near to correct values.
7.3 PROCEDURE
A survey of Noise Assessment, analysis of different dwelling unit and road typology
was conducted in the neighbourhood. The survey was conducted in 16 points in the area
of the neighbourhood to identify and set to take the survey for Nosie Assessment and
analyse the results with respect to the benchmarks provided and as per general analysis.

16 points of assessment are taken from the site. The points are selected in such a way
that we can make conclusions based on various factors determining the noise levels. The
selected point is visited and necessary assessments is done. Measurement of noise using
11
NOISE ASSESSMENT, NOVEMBER 2021

Noise meter for an interval of 5 minutes is done using any of the noise applications.
This can be achieved through logging the assessment. Stop logging at the end of 5
minutes. Screenshots of the measurements are taken of the reading. The Building
analysis near the site can be primarily done by visual analysis and data including
typology and material can be determined. The height of the building is also determined.
The Road analysis is done by visual determination of data including layout and
typology. Typology can be compared with benchmarks for confirmation. Photographs of
the site including photographs of the roads and buildings are also taken.
All mentioned above steps was done in morning, afternoon and night hours. Tables,
maps, photographs and observations are recorded. The location point of the survey was
also analysed according to its surrounding as shown below in the table:

 This is due to the traffic from the collector road in the roundabout, public crowds
and the bus stop noises.

8. ACOUSTIC MODEL OF THE SITE

The Acoustic model is the visual depiction of level of noise using various colours according to
benchmark. The Acoustic model of the site is given below according to the observations along
with colour meter according to range and unit in decibel:

9. NOISE SOURCE AND MAJOR ISSUES

The major noise source in the area is due the high traffic especially in the morning hours.
Overcrowding and public crowds are also another cause in many scenarios. The sound by birds
like crows, sparrows etc. especially in the evening hours are another cause for the exceeding of
sound beyond the prescribed benchmark.
10. INFERENCES
The prescribed benchmark is crossed during the early rush hour of people going to work and
during the evening. The main sources of noise at the points are due to the traffic, bus top, metro
station and the sounds from the locals. The two schools near the neighbourhood is the main
cause of traffic and noise related in the morning. The parents and students going to school in the
morning is one of the main cause for noise in the morning near points 1 and 2. The width of the
roads are within the given benchmark, however traffic jams and honking still prevails due to the
large number of vehicles stopping to drop children at school in the morning.
The area is calm at afternoon hours as no major landmarks or amenities exist in the site and there
is less noise sources. The only sounds can be from the birds in the neighbourhood and the sound
from the metro station at point 7 and the bus stop at point 3. In the night most of the noise is due
to the evening traffic and the locals. In point 15, the presence of the mosque is also another
source of noise. In points 6 and 9, frequent passing of vehicles is another cause of high noise
values.
Most of the noise is absorbed by concrete of which the roads and most of the houses are made.
Due the advantage of building material, this area is seemingly pleasant to live without noise
disturbances. Since the area is rich in vegetation and hence most of the sound is absorbed.
11. CONCLUSION

The selected survey area is comparatively calm and quite with enough spacing between the
buildings and greenery. In the morning rush hours, the noise analyzed crosses the benchmark

prescribed. This is due to the two schools in the neighborhood. In the afternoon, except at some
places the area is within the benchmark noises. Similar is in the case of evening.

The main source of noise is the high traffic, public crowds, metro station, bus stop and the
sounds from birds. Since all the building units are made up of concrete, the sound is absorbed
readily. The neighborhood is very rich in green cover, vegetation and plants. Hence the sound is
again absorbed. The area is pleasant and suitable to live in with most sounds under the noise
benchmark.

The sound assessment performed on the site has pointed towards various issues existing in the
site which is adhering reason for noise increment on site. The analysis is helpful, as solving these
issues can contribute to gradual decrease in noise level. The noise ca be controlled by controlling
the traffic at the peak hours in a proper manner.
